    Intel to discontinue Core i7 920 & 940 CPUs

COMPUTEX 2009: According to sources at Taiwanese motherboard manufacturers, Intel is planning to discontinue a number of its Core i7 processors almost as soon as it pulls the covers off its new Lynnfield CPUs on 1st September.

The models include, but are not limited to, the Core i7 920 and Core i7 940, while one source suggested that the as-yet-unreleased Core i7 950 would also probably get the chop a bit later.
Anyone know if this is going to happen? Seems to me it would make i7 a very exclusive club...

I think I5 will be allot of fun, but if you buy it, you buy something that's less than an older Intel platform. When lots of us guys bought Conroe, we where happy with fast cpu's. The guys who had some more patience, where able to buy Kentsfield afer 10 months (?) after the Conroe release?
I don't want to buy something old lol. And how much future proof is I5 anyway?
If S1136 will be another socket 754, I'm not interested.

Why would they want to discontinue the 920? Isn't that their best selling chip for Core i7? I guess they did that because want consumers to purchase the new 950 which is double the price of 920, which means more money for them. If thats true, Intel will lose more profit than gain then, because nobody wants a CPU that costs too much.

Doesn't really matter if intel drops the 920 to, since there are still the UP xeons, and they are binned better anyway :p

LGA1156 will last for a very long time along with LGA1366. LGA1156 will most likely outlast LGA1366 by quite abit due to being in the lower segments.

But how long will LGA 1366 be viable. I am going to get a i7 kit next week, but I dont want to end up having a socket which only supports cpu's over £500

If this story is true, I am amazed that Intel keeps giving AMD a helping hand to greater marketshare.

Intel have been pretty dumb in the pricing of their i7 and C2Q's against PhII, so I wouldn't be shocked if it turns out to be true.

LGA1366 will support the first 32nm CPUs. (Westmere class).

However Sandy Bridge and Ivy Bridge is a hmmh mm. Either it support none or it support both. From what I heard it support both. But the successor to Ivy Bridge will be a new socket for sure (2012-2013).

WTF where is the i7 920 going? I was planning to buy a very cheap(£155, fu intel) X58 mobo along with the 920, now that 6gb DDR3 sticks are so cheap. Why are they discontinuing 920's? maybe to boost i5 sales, since they almost overlap

    kinda sad

They AINT discontinuing 920. The OP is wrong. Its about 940 and 965.

If they discontinue 920 you would get a 930 for the same price.

So I believe Lynnfield @ 2.8 Ghz priced same as i7 920 will end up being faster of the two.
Thats the usual way. When EOL comes, it is generally accompanied by replacement by a faster product at the same price point.

    Whats i7 marketshare anyway ? Less than 1 % ?

Actually if I recall correctly the i7 aren't actually selling all that well (given economic climate it makes sense) and they haven't made that many either. They got most of the crazy extreme people at or around launch, but if you look at the pricing of the i5 vs the i7 the i5 is rediculously expensive for not performing as well (on first benchmarks).

Intel probably saw the reviews where people are like, uh? Get the 920 or whatever instead, costs about the same and performs better.

    About a million is sold?

Anyway, i7 and i5 performs the exact same besides extreme memory benches. Its the exact same core. Just 3 vs 2 memory channels.

Isn't it some kind of difference between them when overclocking? I think I've read somewhere that the BIOS lack some kind of setting when Xeons are used?

1 Million out of how many there Shintai? What percentage of shipment of CPUs of JUST Intel did i7 make up, just last quarter?

Considering its a new product and enthutiast class it sold very very well. Plus the majority of shipped CPUs is laptop CPUs. So not sure what you wish to compare with.
