    Looking to buy a DLSR

So me and the wife are looking at buying the Nikon D40. To save the money she spends getting the kids pictures taken. Well I will be honest and say I know nothing about DLSR. I have had a few point and shoot 8mp sony's. So is the D40 a good camera I mean is it easy to use? Is the lens that comes with it good? Why do I need different lens's? Is there any thing else I really need that doesn't come with this kit? Is there any thing else I should know? And one last thing how is this price, I have a addtional 10% off.

Yes the D40 is a good camera. especially for the price. but what price are you referring to?
Is it easier to use? depends. for what you're looking to use it for probably. 1: read the manual. 2: read Understanding Exposure by Bryan Peterson. Everyone that owns a DSLR should be forced to read this book.
different lenses achieve differen't things. different focal lengths, different focus distances, different amounts of light. basically the kit lens trys to throw everything you'll need to get by into one lens. i believe the 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G non-VR is what comes with the D40. it's a decent lens. great optics, plastic body and plastic mount. however for portraits it isn't so great.

do you plan on doing your kids portraits? if so, without a more expensive lens and lighting setup you'll receive less than stellar results.

Yes looking mainly to do portraits, what lens should I look at or is there a camera that comes with the lens I need. I'm still trying to keep cost down.

Sorry I had the wrong link.

with an additional 10% off that would be a normal price. d40 kit should be $400-$425. i wouldn't look into any other lenses until you read some books and go through a couple thousand shots. get comfortable with the camera and you skill level before you start thinking about dropping money on better glass. however for portraits you're going to need a lot of light from multiple directions to eliminate shadows and obtain a high enough shutter speed. and you're going to want to make sure it's the same type of light. mixing light type will give you strange/undesirable color.
