    4770 goes AGP

PowerColor, a popular graphics cards brand owned by Tul Corp., has quietly released ATI Radeon HD 4770 graphics card for rather outdated Accelerated Graphics Port bus. The new graphics board has his chances to become a demanded product by owners of old systems wishing to use them for modern video games and high-definition video playback.

ATI Radeon HD 4770, which is powered by ATI RV740 graphics processing units (GPUs), features 640 stream processors, 32 texture units, 16 render back ends and 128-bit GDDR3/GDDR4/GDDR5 memory controller. ATI, graphics business of Advanced Micro Devices, recommends its partners among graphics cards makers to clock the chip at 750MHz and install 512MB of GDDR5 memory at 3200MHz.

Accelerated Graphics Port bus is present on out-of-date systems that typically feature outdated microprocessors and other components. Nevertheless, many users of such systems want to playback high-definition GPU-accelerated video as well as, at least, try out modern video games. As a result, the demand for graphics cards with AGP interface that support DirectX 10.1 application programming interface, hardware acceleration of high-definition video playback and other modern functions still exists.

Since ATI Radeon HD 4770 chip does not feature native AGP support and PowerColor uses a special bridge chip to enable support of AGP interface, end-users have to ensure that the card is actually compatible with their mainboards and systems.

Well, the HD4770 is only slightly slower than a HD4850 and the HD4850 is nearly twice as fast as the HD3850, so one can draw the conclusion that the HD4770 would mop the floor with the HD3850. Now whether or not these older AGP systems can even muster enough speed to push either of those GPU's anywhere near their potential to even show a difference is a matter for debate.

my good old trusty operton 170 @ 2.7 ghz with a DFI NF3 Board (NF4 died...), 4gb ram and new harddisks will be more than sufficient for this card

going to be the final upgrade for this rig (if it doesn't cost more than 100€) as it already has 4 gb Ram; new harddisks and a nice 6 months old seasonic 320 W PSU and a 40"

perfect HTPC with some serious gaming capabilities, despite being more than 3 1/2 years old

Oh yeah, I think this card will hit the market hard.

There are so many people with a limited budget and the old AGP standard on their motherboard - and since AGP more or less is dead, the HD4770 will be the one and only "card-to-buy".

I have a couple of Arcade/Gaming machines that run on P4's with a 9800pro and an X1650 pro both of them AGP. Sticking in a 4770 into them really appeals as I would love to be able to get decent frame rates on the newer games however I have a feeling that the limitations of the CPU will kick in well before the 4770 reaches its potential.

the AGP version is most definitely going to be more than $99. AGP-ified cards always end up a bit more expensive, with bad driver support.

Marketers lie all the time under the influence of congruency with their affiliates.

It's like an informal NDA but for potential products which are undecided.
I've been expected to do this sort of thing myself.

the product is already retail and on sale.. so its not lying its just stupidity

it could be however that Amazon listed it wrong and by doing so spread some the rumour..

It's congruence. Do not divulge information unless your affiliate gives clearance to do so.

Just marketing politeness to avoid botching campaigns. You'd be surprised at the negative effect a few loose lips have in reducing product impact.

Perhaps Powercolor are going to release samples to hardware sites or the marketer has a lack of knowledge about the product and is covering his back from making a mistake.

The Amazon's tech specs list says "## Dual mode ATI CrossFireX multi-GPU support for highly scalable performance", which is impossible with this slot.

No information on TUL about this card.

I somehow think this whole HD4770 AGP thing may be only a typo on Powercolor's retail tables.

AGP people, just stick with that overpriced HD3850 or get a new system..

Powercolor HD 4770 AGP doesn't exist

Powercolor HD 4770 AGP doesn't exist
Amazon's botched listing makes a mess

According to our sources in Powercolor, the listing of a Powercolor HD 4770 AGP card is a simple mistake made by Amazon, and Powercolor has no plans for such card, at least not in near future. We already wrote that Powercolor is thinking of doing an HD 4600 series for AGP, but that is the only thing currently planned.

Amazon made a quite a fuss today after Powercolor's HD 4770 AGP card show up at its site. Unfortunately, numerous tech sites rushed to carry the news, and obviously forgot to contact Powercolor in the process. Obviously, the company was more than happy to clear up the mess caused by someone at Amazon.

Also, it was pretty strange to see a planned AGP card, as partners are practically fighting to get some extra GPUs for due to a shortage caused by healthy demand for the new card. The HD 4770 is the first 40nm desktop card, and this baby works like a charm, and its currently the best budget cards in the sub-$99 price segment.

So, the listing at Amazon is a mistake, and it is probably a plain PCI-Express card and we are sure that they will fix it soon. Those who wanted to see this card will be a bit disappointed but they can hope that Powercolor will launch its AGP 4600 series soon. (I'm waiting for a VLB version of the GT300. sub.ed.)

You can find the card listed here.
