But now Clamatowas is, and can put out over 1 mill PPD.

Clam is the reason we passed 5 mill PPD. We are trying for 6 mill in 1 day now!

i dont know but i would like to get close to what he averaged over there.
that aint happening wife got her eyes on the electric bill lol....
now im blaming the pool pump.
Barnett still has a few servers pointed at EVGA. He is a good guy.
He has 90K PPD reporting in for us today, but that is only a fraction of what he can produce.

so what does he do? He builds server farms and just runs F@H on them until they are ready to be shipped?

I believe he works for a company that has to keep servers powered on, doing nothing. He has gotten the official OK from work, to run F@H.
They need to know the servers are ready to process if need be.
If the need dosent exist, they fold.

Sounds similar to what Angra does. Systems are there, if need be, but while they are idle, they fold.

I wish I could do something like that with the computers at school. There are around 40-50 C2D's which would be a crazy amount of points!
as awesome as that really is.. i can't help but think it dilutes what the guys who pay for their own rigs do it almost seems like they should have a separate category for people who fold at work vs people who actually fund their own folding farms. like atlas/nitteo/WFO and others have spent *tons* of money on rigs AND electric bills, but they get still just get dwarfed by guys who just have access to machines. again, i think its great and for the cause, its as good as it gets... but in the competition of individual people folding...?

F@H isnt about who folds more is it? its not a comp who can fold more.. it all goes to the same cause.. and to be able to make do with what u have and just fold.. if u have servers.. good.. so i dont get why it isnt fair or why there should be another section.. its just an epenis thing i think.. whos team gets mroe points or who can fold more.. its all for the same cause..
I agree... but we do have fun climbing the ranks, both as individuals, and as a team.

Both above are true statements.
We all do what we can within our own finances and abilities.
i use the analogy that what teams do each day is fill a big barrel with water(WU)
Some people bring a pint, some bring a quart and then there are a few who are able to bring a gallon.
It is all that get that barrel filled and take any away from the equation and the job doesn't get done.
Those many folks with their single machine are truly the foundation that makes this all work.
Sure, there are some big movers and shakers but trust me, they get out done every day by the thousands of folks that just have the one machine.
I look at the hearts of the people involved, not at what they can do in a day.

Alright!!! Another points vs. altruism discussion!
We go down this road alot. At the risk of being infammatory, I'll add my $.02.
Thats fine. Everyone has their priorities in reasons for folding. Even if a little holier than thou sentiment is expressed at times... no harm done.
One day we will have the answers to many unknowns in medicine and other scientific fields. We will have cures and treatments for todays un-treatable diseases. Its just a matter of when and by whom. Will it be Pande group and the F@H project? Maybe. Lets be honest here, they have two awesome tools at there disposal: Distributed computing and psychology. Humans thrive on competition of all kinds. Its the driving force behind much of F@H's success. It spurs the intra and extra team arms races.
I'm not ashamed at all to admit that points are my primary motivation. Otherwise, I'd probably just fold with a single, stock clocked Nvidia board of some type.(not that there is anything wrong with that)

that is so true Dr Jay, most of the people that take the "holier than thou sentiment" stance, usually don't turn out huge amounts of wu's.. LMAO! Marvin comes to mind here..
I fold because I want to, people can preach all they want to about what should be the motivator for participation, but the "peanut in the candy" truth reason is "because they want to".
who gives a flying fk what drives them to do it, if it generates participation, then it's not bad. save the preaching for the pulpit on sunday.

like I said, I already know its great for the cause. seriously, that's why I do it at all. i'm just saying we can look at it both ways, it's not like those people would stop folding if the higher competition only folded against the higher competition and those who fold with their own dough could also have the opportunity to be the top of the personally funded lists.
barnettworks works hard in getting all those points in setting up those machines, but in essence, its free for him.
atlasfolder invested 15k of his own dough to fold.
barnettworks puts up 1.4milPPD like its his job (oh wait, it sorta is! )
atlasfolder breaks 350kPPD for the first time and avg's around 300kPPD with an impressive 23 295GTX's
barnettworks obtains clamatowars 15 minute server setup script and blows past 2milPPD
nitteo gets hit by a hurricane and has to invest even more money into his farm that has 50-something 8800GTs folding.
barnettworks hits 2.4milPPD thanks to clamato's script + free hardware that his company allows him to run.
is the world a better place? yes. is it a different level and different type of performance? yes. are there different things at stake for each folder? yes. are we all folding for the same reason? probably not.
anyway, it doesn't really matter to me since I have a whopping 5k avg PPD. My point was, we have some people who are mostly in it for the points and that they personally invest a lot of themselves into this because its competition for them, and not necessarily because it might saves lives. Of course, that's a convenient side-benefit to this competition but if we wanted to REALLY support the cause and keep the competition-type folks engaged and continuing to personally invest in this competition that might save lives, we would separate these groups.

MikeB12 and WFO : You both make good points. (In your posts as well as for the team...)
Rise: I see you point as well. People who are in this for the points and competition are suddenly faced with something to which they cannot compete at all, regardless of their financial or time contributions.
I do get the warm and fuzzy feeling mentioned earlier for helping. But I know myself, if not for the competition and points currency, my ppd output, as meager as it is compared to many of you would probably be 50% or less of what it is now.
Rise, my apologies if I am taking your tread off topic.
Official ORB bottom feeder.
I feel that people like barnettworks are doing what F@H was intended for.. running it on hardware that would otherwise be running idle or with little workload.
But then again, competition would be the biggest thing that brings about more folding.
