Depends on what the data means to you.
Everything I want to keep I burn and make 2 copies.
The rest, if it goes, I'll rebuild.

raid6 is raid5 and then mirrored completely, like a raid1 of a raid5 array, right?
    now that should do it!

but really, how come 2 drives fail at the same time?
maybe mixing ssds with hdds is causing some problems on the raid controller rather than the hdds themselves?
or maybe the server itself is unstable and corupts the raid array...
or maybe the ssd firmware isnt optimized for raid5 and causing some weird issue, i really wouldnt be surprised about that...

i wouldnt want to be responsible for this going wrong, id just ask some raid or datacenter expert to set it all up and then have them maintain it too... maybe johan de gelas can help, he sure knows his way around with servers and he seems a nice enough guy he might do this for free or a minimum charge if we ask very very nicely

should we hold off posting incase a more recent backup is restored or is this as good as it gets and we should move on?

My gut feeling after talking with Charles tonight is this is what we got..
My suggestion to people is if your making a worklog or such save your pics and do a copy/paste of your text into a text and save with your pics into a folder to cover yourself.

Saaya, "coop, where did you find that picture of the xs server?
now that i see it... i really dont get how it could have failed, its clearly memtest stable! "
a picdump. More importantly though, what you said about Google. I looked at the "Scantily Clad" thread through my email notifier. I am sure the whole thing is there. I looked at several recent pages and back to p-12. Is there a way to import that or somehow save that link and get it back? I'm don't know anything about internet/server type details. Out of all the people here, I would think that if it could surely someone would now how. Is it only available for a certain amount of time? There was no "new" data from the other threads, but the whole Scanty thread is there. It was the most popular with about 152,000 visits. About a thousand in the last week.

Save the girls, the mind is a terrible thing to waste.

Sucks but it is what it is.
MM, is that from this time (mid April) or the last (end of March)?

the last one i think... march was when they tried to move from hdd to ssd, and it went very very wrong apparently.
then moved back to hdd but things were not right somehow, and now, a few weeks later the hdds failed somehow...

Yeah, I know the one in March is when Fugger lost 2 HDD's doing the switch to SSD's. MM's post makes it sound like he lost another 2 this time, so I wanted to verify.

I was wondering where some of my recent posts went ... oh well, not to worry, I'm sure we have all lost data before and its not as if we are paying for this.

The site still has my support for best PC tech site on the net.

Yeah, and you would think with a forum as popular as this one that they would have a good raid controller with raid6 support. In the next month my server will be raid6 (currently raid5). You guys need help with hosting/off-site backup? I would be happy to help/provide it for free if you guys don't have or can't afford an off-site backup for your files/dbs so you never have more than a 24 hour rollback again.

Thanks for the hard work getting the forums back up ADMINs.

RMA the SSDs N get some 15000rpm SCSI Ultra320 raid arrays with lots more drives to fail but less chance of losing the forums for days.

I haven't dealt with Mac based server hardware but i'm sure it can be done this is Xtreme after all.

    Question

I know this isn't my thread.....but I lost a bunch of stuff too...

I thought I was censored because I was talking too much.....

But instead was it really lost?????

Cause I lost my subscriptions too and some of my signature..... and no one notified me that it was too big or anything????

I haven't been on in over a week since it went down for that month...

    did it go down again?????

    Thanks

    David

    two things:

    1) it went down and we reverted to april 10th backup

    2) the first major outtage was only 2 weeks, not a month.

Actually, it is fairly common to merge a database with another one and remove duplicates. Being an Apple server, I assume it is running MySQL, which is completely capable of merging a backup, with the current database, keeping all new posts intact, while adding any that are missing.

What Charles needs is someone off-site doing DB backups. vBulletin has the capability of having Admins log into the admin console and save the entire DB to a local Access DB. If two or three admins made it a regular practice to make a backup every other day, the site would never be without a recent backup.

For the record, this post is not a complaint, I am just offering information.
