What I do to get the driver to work is first I have winzip installed. This way you can take the setup exe and right click on it, now hoover over the winzip and click on 'extract to folder'. This should give you all the contents including inf folder.
Now go for an update driver for your vid card, do 'have disk', direct the update to the inf folder of the new driver and click on it. Now you'll see a list card models, if it is a old driver you may only see up to 9700 card. You can acually click on that card. It will give a warning that it wasn't made for your card, have it install it anyway. After reboot you'll see that it shows your card as a 9700 in this case.
To fix this,, before installing the driver you go into the inf folder and open both the C2 and CX inf files. Look for any where it shows 9700 and retype it to read the name of your card, like "RADEON 9800 XT" save all that. Now you do the update only this time you will see the "RADEON 9800 XT" in the list and not 9700, click on that one. It will do the same thing saying it's no good,,install it anyway
Took me forever to write this
