    BFG Announces EX-1200 Modular Power Supply

    BFG Technologies, Inc., the leading North American and European supplier of advanced NVIDIA-based 3D graphics cards, power supplies, and the Phobos High-Performance Gaming/Home Theater System, announced today the BFG EX-1200 modular power supply with Frequency Conversion Technology, which emulates virtually any size power supply and is at least 80% efficient, even with loads as low as 10% of the unit’s maximum capability.

    The BFG EX-1200 modular power supply is rated at 1200 watts continuous at 40 °C (140 °F) and features 98 amps on the 12 volt rail. The unit also has a separate +5VSB which provides better efficiency when the unit is in standby or powered down. The EX-1200 power supply is 80 Plus certified and supports NVIDIA 3-Way SLI, making it the perfect choice for high efficiency and systems running multiple graphics cards.



    “Most high wattage power supplies are extremely inefficient when idle or running day-to-day office tasks”, said John Malley, senior director of marketing for BFG Technologies. “Our exclusive Frequency Conversion Technology enables the EX-1200 to maintain at least 80% efficiency even when not being tasked with power intensive 3D games, and when the system is idle it uses approximately one fourth of the power that it would during gaming. That means real energy savings for the customer and a greener environment for everyone.”

    It's got those new 8-pin PCI Express connectors!

    Although seriously, bigger PSU are notorious for having lousy efficiency at lower power draws (i.e. everyday stuff), so if that 'Frequency Conversion' thing actually works, this might actually have a decent selling point over many others in the same bracket. Don't think I like the modular interface, though. Looks way too many cables are hard-attached to the PSU still. Personally, I don't lose any sleep if my fans or HDD's suffer a 0.001V drop from a modular plug, and I'd just as soon have one less string of unused plugs to stuff into my case somewhere.

    Variable switching frequency.

    Hilbert from Guru3D tested it, and said:

    I decided to take a power hungry nForce 790i SLI motherboard. Then took 2x GTX 295 (four GPUs) for maximum power consumption. Then I added another GeForce GTX 280 purely for PhysX. Then we took a power hungry QX9770 processor and overclocked it towards 3600 MHz. Then we overclocked our memory as well.
    Then, with their best shot at loading the rig, the power draw was :

    The reality is harsh though, with all that equipment and tweaks we just could not pass ~725 Watts load.
    It seems you have to use some TECs to really make this beast sweat.

    I like the newer tech to give efficeincy at idle loads. I don't like the fat cables. I got a good (not the best) Ultra X3 1000W because the cables are all flat and modular. Thats true modular cabling, and very very easy to manipulate. Give me full modular flat cables and I'll really like it.

    BUT...... Having a direct solder point for the main power connectors is a bonus. Less chance of a bad connection and low voltage loss.

    I dunno, I'm all messed in the head now contradicting myself. Over 80% at low loads might be a good thing. Unless your a mad crazy uber 295 x2 24/7 cruncher.

    Huh? Guru3D could only manage 725W from the wall? They were doing something wrong, then. With OCCT's PSU stresser, I can break 800W from the wall with my own rig, and I've only got a single GTX280. I'm pretty sure I'd pop my 1000W if I had a pair of GTX295's.

    If it works or not, it needs to be tested. However its good that companies are not just solely focusing on producing psu with wattage in mind and that they are also trying to improve efficiency.

    Gimmick or not we'll find out soon.

    no 80 plus silver = not interested

    we had normal 80 plus PSUs for over 2 years now, i hope some manufacturers follow enermax + seasonic and provide 80 plus silver and gold PSus

    as long as it doesn't offer 80 Plus bronze or silver (or almost gold like the enermax revo series which failed by 1%) this thing is no better than PSUs form 1 year ago

    No, 725w DC load, not AC power drawn from the wall, you must calculate the efficiency number to find that particular number -say it is 82% @that kinda load, then power draw from the wall would be around 885w AC, CMIIW.

    It changes its switching frequency based on the load. Allows it to be more efficient at low loads than standard designs.

    I thought that might have been the case, but they were talking about how it's harder to get the power consumption up with efficient PSU's, which suggested they're talking about the wall socket draw. Hard to say, they weren't big on details there. Although even if that's just the DC load, still seems low.
