How to turn your Geforce 9800GTX+ into a GTS250

Nvidia didn't make much friends over their recent launch of the Geforce GTS 250. Not surprising, as many tech sites found out that the GTS 250 is nothing more than a Geforce 9800GTX+ with an updated BIOS. To make matters worse, Nvidia then refused many tech sites for sampling their GTS 250 (knowing they will get slated for it). Having said that, the Geforce GTS 250 is still an OK card in terms of price and perfomance. It competes directly with ATI's Radeon HD 4850, which have been selling quite well.

If you do feel cheated by Nvidia ... don't worry! CPU3D is here to help. If you got a Geforce 9800GTX+ in your current system ... we'll show you how flash it and turn it into a Geforce GTS 250!

If the PCB's match and your card can handle the clocks it should be a go.

I'd like to see 8800GTS/512 vs 9800GTX+ vs GTS250 clock for clock with just BIOS flashes all on the same card.

All along the watchtower the watchmen watch the eternal return.

Why? You like seeing graphics with 3 bars reaching the same values?

They should make a guide "How to turn your GTS250 into a 8800GTS".
    That would actually make sense.
You were not supposed to see this.

    That was a good one.

I mean, you were making a satirical joke, right?
Cause the "new" GTS250 basically has exactly the same GPU as the 9800GTX+,
    9800GTX, 9800GT, 8800GTS and 8800GT -- the difference being only that
newer G92-b is a minor shrink and runs on a bit higher frequency by default.

I am still very impressed with the 8800GT...all the renaming has run Nvidia's reputation through the mud..the constant pressure to lure new suckers into the GFX upgrade addiction is pathetic.

There a lot of things I upgrade but my GFX are usually last...why? Because everytime I buy something Graphical that is supposedly cutting edge it's "obsolete" 3 months after release...which is utter rubbish. It's not like they are unaware of the product schedule..it's just a convenioent money mill for them to convince everyone that last week is ancient history...

Not like the games are obsolete... if my 8800GT plays DiRT last year it'll still play it this year...ya know?

Anyhoo can anyone state what benefit there would be from a BIOS reflash of the 9800GTX? Can't you get the same result from OCing the card?

nVidia tweaks all the new drivers so, that the ''newer'' cards benefit from them. They make the gap between the ''old G92'' and ''new G92'' cards with the drivers. So a BIOS-flash doesn't look that pointless after all.

So mainly for running game codes I guess.

I basically use my cards for Folding...so as long as they do that I guess I don't really notice driver improvements (until they up my PPD )

The 8800gts 512 core clocks better than 9800gtx/gt + becuase it has almost zero coldbug, but thats probly pcb related but thte 8800gts 512 is much better for benchmarking on ln2.

And the GTS 520 the next year, who knows?

For a GTS 610, anything can happen with Nvidia, but I honestly don't think they will go that far, though.

Games and idle consumption mainly; but if you only fold, then you'll not see
    much if any improvement.
