Giant server seized in raid on file-sharing site

Swedish police find computer with 65 terabytes of files

    http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/29566891

STOCKHOLM - Police have made a major crackdown on illegal file-sharing by seizing a giant computer server during an apartment raid in a Stockholm suburb, an official said Saturday.

Henrik Ponten, a spokesman at the Swedish Anti-Piracy Bureau, said the server contained about 65 terabytes of files, corresponding to around 16,000 full-length movies.

"The size of the works are gigantic," he said, noting it was one of the biggest pirate server confiscations ever in Sweden.

And the rest, all that pr0n will lead to a heart attack or at least some sprained wrists

NBC's title for the article is wrong though, "file-sharing" isn't right, what they nabbed was a private scene run ftp server. "file-sharing" makes it sound like some kind of peer to peer venture.

Raid-5 through SAS/SATA2 expanders in multiple machines over NFS I believe. Pretty amazing setup I have to say

I suppose the difference would be organized vs disorganized.

Rapidshare/Megaupload/etc are disorganized setups with content everywhere it'd take you a few years to go through it all

65TB does not seem a lot to me, knowing a HD movie in mkv takes about 4GB - 12GB

Meh, 65TB is a lot but there are a bunch of people on HD sites with set ups like that. It seems excessive but with blu-ray movies at 40GB a pop and even some encodes pushing 20GB it might be a wise measure of future-proofing. And I don't really know of anyone running >10TB in RAID5, probably RAID6 at least.

EDIT: Just noticed in the article that it was a Scene server.

"Ponten the server is part of an international pirate network called "The Scene," providing users of Internet file-sharing sites such as Sweden's The Pirate Bay with extensive access to copyright protected material"
Retards. I love the finger pointing.

Wonder which groups were using this server host and if there'll be corrosponding scene group arrests like we saw a few years back. That is of course if this was being used by legit scene groups or if the authorities are saying that to make it sound extra seedy.

    Hm, might hop on iRC.

The original article is wrong on several points.

First of all: The police hasn't done anything really. It's lobby organization "Antipiratbyrån" (Anti Piracy Bureau) that has been trying to infiltrate a FTP ring, but they only got access to an up/download server. Nothing inside the actual ring.

Second: Henrik Pontén is an idiot. He doesn't know anything about how computers work. He claimed that they had actually infiltrated the Scene. He claimed that they managed to bypass "a lot of technological protections" to get to the server. It sooner looks like someone came to them and gave them the information. Perhaps someone who got kicked out from the ring.
He made a fool of himself on several occasions during the TPB trial.

Third: The ring then went down as a security measure but is up and running again. No one really cared or mourned the loss. There were most likely at least seven people waiting to replace the rather insignificant server that was removed.
