Looks like I need to fix my links....

Yes a 70-200 2.8 is good enough. That is what I use 98% of the time. Every once in a while I'll throw a 1.7x teleconverter on for some close ups. For bigger zoos sometimes you'll want a bit more reach though so something like a 100-400 might be a better option. Depends on the exhibits in the zoo. Either way the 70-200 can get the job done.

dang... been meaning to get a 70-200 2.8 IS... just got to squeeze that by the missus and make sure she does not recognize it...

or perhaps time the purchase with the kid's school performance or something...

    nice pics...

You can always fall back on the 70-200 f4 non-IS. Much easier to swallow a $500-600 purchase than a $1500-$1800

true... but not sure about the speed tho...
yes, my girls are not becoming the world's best ballerinas overnight... rather they are turning into the ballet teacher's worst nightmares... but one thing my wife keeps talking about is being able to take nice pics of indoor performances of the kids...

It will work on crop as good as on full-frame.. probably better (cause you are using "sweet spot" of lens with APS-C).

Actually, if you shoot fast moving low light objects, IS is pretty much useless.. cause you need to keep shutter speed that fast, that you can get good picture without IS, and if you need to use IS, than you have probably shutter speed slow too much to get any decent pic.

IS is good for longer times and non-moving objects. Cause it will make slow shutter speed possible, but it cant remove motion blur.

And from my short experience.. in real life you have either fast shutter and no need for IS, or slow that much, that you need tripod.

well, back from my first outing to the zoo... basic feedback from my first outing...

    1) 90% of pics is of kids... not the animals...
i think i will make it a project everytime we go to the zoo, instead of trying to rush through and see all the exhibit, make kids (twins are 5 going on 6 now...) take notes on the animal and we'll take some pics of em...

    2) well, we've decided to go to the zoo more often so took out a yearly premium membership...

    3) dang zoo's close early... so we've only covered 1/4 of the zoo... he he he...

    4) cages and bars and wire mesh... yea... not so cool when the birds are enclosed in a smaller cage... but meh... kids had fun so...

    5) takes a bit more practice... my pic's are not that impressive, as im still learning and this is my new lens... so getting used to it...

    6) moving animals are hard to snap pics of...

well, here's some of my pics from my latest trip...

pic of birds with mustache... as per my daughters...

um... yea... grasshoppa needs to learn more... guess back to wax on, wax off for me...

when you're a nub, even the turtles are moving too fast... lol

at least this guy came out and posed for me... for a second or so...

    he he he...
