Zoo Photography

It's warming up here in PA so I plan on getting out to the Zoo soon. Probably not this weekend unfortunately as I believe it's supposed to rain. I love shooting at the Zoo as a lot of photo hobbyists do. If you'd like to; start posting your '09 Zoo trip pics! (or older if you'd like)

these were taken at london zoo last summer ....hope u like them!





this one was at woburn safari park....its not a particularly good photo...but i like the little baby monkey!! it was taken with my 80-400 and x2 converter....its a little grainy because i had to use such a high ISO

but still, its a cute little monkey on its mothers back!

Can't you see its an old lady lioness? Look at the front, its hanging like the sleeve of a wizard.

Great pictures, but a bit too much post processing for my tastes.

Now to contribute, here's some pictures taken at the Smithsonian Zoo in Washington DC. They were taken with my Nikon D50 + Nikon 55-200mm VR lens. As for post processing, I just resized them and did an auto-level in Photoshop.

i usually shoot in aperture priority. i rarely care about shutter speed unless i know i need a fast enough shutter speed to stop a certain type of motion. then i'll shoot manual. under certain lighting i still shoot manual. but i've found with both my D50 and D90 they auto meter incredibly accurate and meter to the shutter speed i would have chosen anyway and i've missed too many shots while adjusting my shutter speed in full manual.

not a bad shot at all. looks well composed. generally you would want to fill the frame with the bird but i'm guessing you were limited by the focal length of the lens?

yessir! i was shooting in nub mode!

and yep again, i'm stuck with the kit lens for the XSi...

not sure if i zoomed in at all tho... kinda tough juggling camera, bag and 3 kids... lol...

ah yes, i can see how having the kids along would hinder your abilities a bit. you may have heard this before but the best tip for a beginner.... read Understanding Exposure by Bryan Peterson, and never let your dial leave Manual mode (at least until you're comfortable with it). once you've gained a comfort with manual you'll start learning how to use modes like shutter priority and aperture priority to your needs. and keep shooting!
