Whats the good PSU these days

So I got a Q9550 running 3.6ghz 1.2v, 4850X2 running OC'ed, 8gb RAM, 2 HD's, Antec 900 and all the fans my 500w Fortron BlueStorm would turn off. Haha I know its way too weak but its running fine on a Antec Truepower 430 right now even under load but I don't trust it...

So whats the hot PSU these days, thinking maybe in the 750-850w range?

Heh, I have one of those 430 TruPowers in my old 3Ghz P4.

    Lets see... you need...

    Corsair 620HX!

    Asus P6T | Corsair H100 | i7 920 @ Stock| 6GB Corsair DDR3 1600Mhz |
    EVGA GTX670 SC 4GB | 4x WD Caviar Black 640GB RAID10 Array | CoolerMaster Centurion 590 |
    Corsair 850HX Modular PSU

The Corsair's are kicking butt these days!

A HX520W will work, so will the newer TX550W,
but if you want some extra overhead & room to grow you can't beat the HX620W or (TX650W fixed error).

The HX620W is a tank, 5yr warranty, super quiet, IMO, just about perfect,
although advertised as multi-rail, they function as Single Rail PSU's.

Corsair won "Brand of the Year" a couple of places & they are all JonnyGURU.com Recommended. Lots of awards!

    Enjoy,
    Dave

I'm really loving my In Win 850w Commander. It performs extremely well for the brand!

    You people are recommending a 600W PSU for a system with a 3.6GHz Yorkfield and a HD4850X2?!?
[reality check]HD4850X2 alone draws over 220W at stock in load. Add to that 275-300W the rest of the systems chomps away you end up with 80-85% utilization of the 12V rails of HX620. And since this Corsair is not that silent even without load imagine the racket in full load...
    [/reality check]

Corsair TX750/850 are built by CWT which means there's a nasty ripple.
TX850 has five times higher 12V ripple than on Signature 850W.

I'm willing to bet all my money that a HX520 will run this rig just fine

Sure, even a HX520 will run it fine but it won't be pretty for the ears.

There's nothing nasty about being in spec. The FSP Epsilons... now there's some nasty ripple. No, the Corsairs are not Signature grade units, but they're also not that expensive either.

Well if you want 700W+, then:

    Corsair 850W +12V@70A: $120

    Corsair 750W +12V60A: $110

Both Recommended, the 850W being the Best Buy!

    Enjoy,

Well I'm still running this Antec TruePower430w its running really good! Ran linpack and games still going strong, but still worried it might just blow up.

How are the modular SeaSonic's in the 750-850w range?

Seasonic M12Ds are priced about the same as Antec Signature but it seems they're not quite as good as Antec SGs.

Yeah I should have specified those are waaayyyy too much for me. The Corsair 850w doesn't look bad for 120, but then theres the Antec Signature for 159 free ship....

btw why is the ripple so important? I mean even this old Antec TruePower 430w is holding up so far so those Corsairs cant be too bad

Beware of the Antec SG 650w. It only has 1 each PCIe 6pin and 6+2 pin, and you can only use two of the three modular connections simultaneously. It seems the 650w are very cable limited. I am at the limit of my PSU, and I think a 850w is the only way to upgrade.

Hey, you live pretty close to me! Yeah I am leaning to the Corsair 850w but I am so surprised this little 430w is handling it so far maybe I wont need to get it...

Corsair's are excellent PSU, but too noisy for me and not modular (not a deal breaker). I was looking for a 750w, but some of them are cable limited and expensive. Newegg has a recertified Seasonic 700w with 2 x 6+2Pin PCI-E connectors.
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817151042.
Also their is a refurbished Zalman ZM850-HP on Ebay. Both of these are really quiet, have adequate cables and come with a warranty.
The best deal is a PC Power & Cooling 750w Quad (red) on Amazon for $90 shipped. It also has a $15 mail-in rebate.
    Happy Hunting!

Like others already suggested, I would go with a HX620. It can deliver more power than you need, is of high quality, modular and quiet. You don’t need a 700+ PSU for that rig, it will only make your PSU work inefficient at idle (which is most of the time.)

    3770K 4.7Ghz 1.32v / ASUS P8Z77-V PRO / 8GB DDR3 1866 9-9-9-27 /ASUS HD7970 1025MHz / Antec NeoHE 550 / Samsung 830 256GB Crunching

That just is not the case. Higher wattage rating doesn't mean lower efficiency in low loads - infact, Corsair TX750 is more efficient in low loads than HX620.

Ah, I see. In this case it doesn’t matter indeed. But with other PSU’s it is true, so I think you should take my remark as a point to look for. For people interested, read this article: http://www.anandtech.com/casecooling...spx?i=3413&p=1 It seems corsair makes just excellent PSU’s. I still recommend the HX as it is modular and proven to be very good.

    No, it quite is not.
There might even be a slight positive correlation with efficiency and increasing wattage rating as highly rated units more likely are built of higher quality components thus efficiency increases.

Have you looked at the Anandtech article. If there numbers are true, which I believe, my remark is true for other PSU’s. Look at 150w: you see that almost all PSU’s in the midrange are 85%+ efficiency whether from the high wattage PSU’s most are under 85% efficiency at 150w load.

I know it is not true for ALL psu’s and maybe the new generation PSU’s is even better and doesn’t suffer from this phenomenon, but I still think it is something to look out for.
