    Exclamation Headala's i7 920 batch list

Hey, folks, I'm going to go to Microcenter to buy my i7 920 in the next two days. I've been doing a good bit of research into which batch #'s OC the best. I'm not totally sure it's not a futile effort; at the least I don't think you can say "all 3841's are great", etc. because there is so much variance, even down to the last 3 digits.

So, here's my list of batches I think I'll be looking for, and then one of batches I'll avoid. I post this as a resource to others, and welcome any comments or new information. PLEASE, if your experience differs from how I have a batch listed, post your experience! Thanks!

Favorable batches (best at the top):
    3838B079**
    3837B194**
    3838A755*
    3837B317
    3837A909
    3837B080
    3841A505
    3838B096
    3839A606
    3839A626
    3835A766
    3838A937
    3841A625
    3839A557
    3838B266

Unfavorable batches (worst at the bottom):
    3836A772
    3837A769
    3837A768
    3838A685
    3841A43x-
    3842A938--

Fiskov, that's good to know. What's your CPU voltage? I was basing my assesment on this data; Ghigo's chip (same batch as yours) required more voltage to get a lower speed than those of similar voltages:
    3838A824 3815mhz On 1.33 True 120 The Nemesis
3837A909 4050mhz On 1.33 Ek sup. Wb SmokeyTheBandit
    3838A755 4116mhz On 1.33 Fuzion V1 Fallwind
    3837B017 4015mhz On 1.33 True 120 NBF
    3837A768 3800mhz 1.34 unkown Wb Ghigo

Supershanks, that thread is where I've collected most of this data from. There's a lot in there!

Batch 3839A626 here, AWESOME chip, hit 4Ghz stable on 1.3V w/ fuzion v2, load temps mid 60's, I might be able to get the volts lower, I'll give it a try.

Wow, that's pretty nice, I'll add it to the "want" list.

Fiskov, I'd be happy to change yours in the list but I need to know your CPU voltage first.

Nice OC, Factotum! I should have stated, however, that all the above are with HT on. Therefore, it's not as easy to compare yours to the above. But that seems like a great batch.

I'm glad to hear it! However, I cannot take too much credit; most of my data came from the other thread...I just looked at the data. I'm still not convinced that there is more than a moderate correlation between batch and OC'ing...but I always like to think every little bit helps!

Great! Is that with HT on or off?

    Yes this chip is awesome.

    UPDATE:

I've got it stable at 4Ghz now with 1.2625 bios (19x212). I haven't really tried to see what it can do under the 1.375V but I'm sure it would be close to that.

    Headala,

I see that you have 3841A43* on the list of poor overclockers and I was curious why. I have one and have had good luck with it so far (although I am hitting a wall trying to get to get to a LinX stable 4.2) I searched this thread and the Core i7 Overclock thread for bad 3841 chips and the only one I saw was from a guy that was having other problems with his system. This is not a "don't call my baby ulgy" post, I am just curious if I missed some information from people that have the same lot number as I do.

    Thanks

Actually all babies are ugly compared to mine...just kidding. I figured this thread would worry someone at some point. The problem with all this is that it relies on the OC'ing ability of the users and the systems submitting. So, if one guy's OC'ing skills suck (like mine), it would look like their chip sucks but in reality it might not (or it still might). So, please don't take offense if you're having good luck with one I marked as 'bad'. I was basing having that chip on the 'bad' list from this post:

I can happily report that batch number 3841A507 runs at up to 3.6Ghz on nothing more then VID vcore of 1.19 set in bios, 1.17 idle, and 1.15 under full load. Taking her up to 3.8Ghz requires nothing more then 1.225 set in bios to stay stable. Orthos/Prime/IBT stable on all of the above for 8 hours. 4Ghz requires 1.3 so it takes a big jump for that last 200mhz, but is rock solid there too. Too bad it's only stock cooled or I'd be running 4Ghz 24/7, but am constrained to only 3.6 as a 24/7 speed to keep full load temps below 85C.

All settings above are with HT on and Turbo off.

    !
No worries, just curious, I missed the post you were referring to but the one I was talking about is the guy quoted in the post you mention above.
I was able to take my chip up to 4.011 on Air but the temps were above 90c if I went any higher. I just set up a wc system so I could go higher with better temps and I will update as soon as I get my 6 new fans on my rad set up on Friday. Was able to get 4.095 LinX stable with three bad fans on a MCR 320 rad but hit a wall trying for 4.2, we will see what this baby can really do when I have my push pull rad set up as temps should no longer limit me.

Hmmmm.....my 920 batch 3837B317 couldn't even reach a stable 4GHz by any combination of BCLK or voltage manipulations (I went as high as 1.48ish vcore) that I've tried on my ASUS P6T6 WS Revolution. I've settled for 3.8GHz (19*200) as I can get that prime stable, but that requires a vcore of 1.4v. So there must be significant heterogeneity within batches as far as overclocking potential (or I just suck wind at overclocking, or both).

I have the 3841A574 from Micro center as well. Rest of my rig, including Evga x58 should be arriving monday/tuesday. Hope I can get 4.0 with a TRUE push/pull. Will report in a couple days.

    Anyone else have this batch?

    Re: Good batch

So far it seems like a great chip, and the price was right. I haven't messed with mine too much. I left everything at stock, just set the proper timings. I bet you will be happy with your results. I will upgrade to water sometime this summer and probably try to hit 4.0 Please let me know how you do, I would like the template you will use if you do get that clock speed.
