    ~~~The "I Just Scored" thread~~~
    Any dumpster divers here?
    You know it doesn't matter how old I get or how much money I have in the bank old habits die hard. My wife will no longer send me to the landfill because I usually come back with a bigger load than I left with.
    Let's keep track of our hardware scores/finds here.
    So my neighbor called me over today to work on her brand new $4000 dell. On my way out the door she offered me all her old hardware which consisted of the following:
    1 Sony SDM-HS73 17"tft
    1 Dell E173FPC 17" Lcd
    1 dell dimension w/
    E21088 775 motherboard(dead)
    350w 24pin Atx psu
    512mb DDR ram
    Black dvd burner
    Radeon x600 pciex 128mb
    Tv tuner card
    Intel P4 620 3Ghz with nice heatpipe and high rpm fan.
    wireless dell keyboard and mouse.
    Score!
    I love freebies.
    2 weeks ago I went to the local landfill site after a garage cleanout, someone had dumped an old emachines PC. I quickly managed to get out a P4 Chip and 1Gb of RAM before anyone came around.
    I am glad the wife was not with me as I don't think she would have been too impressed.
    I don't get this thread, the crap you get out of these ventures are, well, crap. What's the point? To collect and catalog hardware parts like Wall-E?
    Wall-E. Lolz!!
    There was a local council clean up in my area, found quite a few decent PCs with nothing wrong with them sitting outside peoples houses.. Only grabbed one though! I was with my girlfriend and she already thinks I'm mad, with the amount of crap I hoard!
    I Scored;
    Couple of gigs of DDR1 400mhz
    WIFI PCI card
    Few fans and cables.
    Couldn't bring myself to take anymore
    people are super stupid about that stuff.
    My roommate asked me if I could build him a computer for his family the other day and I said "yeah, how much do you wanna spend?" and he goes: "well not right now because I dont have the money, its gonna cost like $2,000 right?"
    I laughed and said "no, like 500"
    Yes I kid you not it's an absolutely beautiful $4000(maybe an exaggeration...possibly $3000) Dell and it's almost as fast as my secondary rig with an e6300 & 8800GTS 640mb that cost me all of $400. She was mainly having problems because her old xp card games wouldn't install on Vista.
    A friend of mine called me to his work (he's IT support), they were cleaning out their offices. We went through their bins in the back and made a HUGE haul of misc various server grade hardware. I p ut it all on ebay and made BANK so we split it 50/50!
    You don't hoard it you play with it until your'e bored and then sell it or give it away. I build computers for many people so this sort of thing is really useful.
    late last year i pulled two 1000W UPSes and two Dell Poweredge 2600 servers out of a dumpster. one had 4GB registered DDR333, the other had 2GB. both had 2 3.2ghz hyperthreaded xeons, the 4GB machine had 2mb l3 per CPU, the 2GB one had 1mb.
    earlier last year i was walking past a computer store at about 11pm on the way home, and it had a dumpster outside full of PSUs and brand new unopened cases.
    i regret that night... i only got 4 cases and 12 PSUs
    i got tired after dragging that many back to my place.
    though i should mention that they are very light weight cases, and the PSUs are L&C brand... ie probably good for less than half of their rated 400W.
    those are my two major scores... i could barely believe my eyes both times.
    i've nabbed heaps of smaller stuff... every discarded computer i see i rape for its fans. listening to music at the moment through scavenged speakers connected to a small 12V powered AMP taken from a discarded socket 7 system. check out the LCD monitor i'm working on right now http://www.gpforums.co.nz/thread/343835
    i think it's a modern expression of hunter-gatherer instincts
    oohh, before i forget... i have a d-link DSL-502T ADSL2 modem sitting behind me that i just tested... i haven't connected it to an ISP but the web interface and everything is working perfectly... pulled out of someone's trash a few weeks ago
    it gets hard to believe sometimes
    Not recently but a couple/few years back I found an emac(700mhz) that someone tossed into the landfill. I brought it home and discovered they attempted to install tiger 10.4 and messed up so they tossed it out. I reinstalled and had my first ever mac. Rather liked it actually.
    After about six months I sold it on ebay for a little over $300.
    A couple of months ago I was doing a job for a pharmacy. They had a PC which died and they wanted me to give them a brand new one with their Epos stuff setup.
    They said "throw the old one away" so I took it home and had a look at what was wrong. The PSU had died, so I scored a P4 2.66, 512MB DDR, 80GB HDD machine
    A dual-input Sony Trinitron 21" crt. This was like a $600 crt at the time, and absolutely NOTHING was wrong with it. Not even a scuff.
    Still have it in my closet, as it's still my favorite monitor, but it's way too heavy to use on my desk I think.
    My dad goes to our county auction every year. This year the court house relaced all of their pc's so their old P4 dells with 512mb in them were up for auction. There were 36 of them he bid $15 a piece and won. after getting them home they had a copy of office pro 2003 taped to the side we sold those for $65 each and then put an extra 512mb of mem and installed Xp and sold the all for $200-$300! Super mega score!!!!
    I just scored! I went to my local salvation army thrift store and picked up somebodies rig for $9.99. It's a dual Xeon server machine built by fujitsu. It has dual scsi 320gb cheetas and 2gb pc2700. Both cpu's are there and the videocard is a quadro that sort of looks like a 6800 series card. It looks like agp but something looks different about it. It powers on but no video so I have to investigate to learn further details. Saaaaweet.
    I didn't dumpster dive, but last night a friend sent me a link to Dell's small business page for a $599 Vizio 32" 1080p LCD HDTV... for $500 off... making it $99. I hopped on that, free shipping, add tax, came to $106.68.
    That is of course, assuming Dell ships it and doesn't claim a price mistake. It did say at checkout, "Save $500 on select TVs when purchased through Dell Small Business"...
