looking to overclock or use with a quiet or low profile cooler? the chips with less cache will conume less power and produce less heat, the q9550s is intended to business use and you will probably have a hard time finding one for sale. my first quad was a q9300 and it was a screamer.

Surely an Athlon II X4 600e would run cooler?

+1 for AMD chip, they run cooler.

I dont know what the Q9XX0's are doing but on my lowly Sunbeam Core Contact Freezer (5-6c higher temps than the TRUE/Mega) my AMD Phenom II 965BE Chip peaks at 57c load @ 3950 Mhz with 1.520v...54c if I leave the CPU-NB ( i7 uncore) at stock.

To answer your question, the 860 comsumes less power but I don't think runs much cooler than the 920.
