On the mainland sure. But just like the US, connect anywhere else in the world and you run into slowdowns. It's all about bottlenecks.
    Windows 7 + SSD:
Mode: AHCI, default Microsoft driver or latest Intel RST
    Defrag: Off
Hibernation: Off (use Sleep mode, recommend a UPS)
Indexing: On (it only indexes a few locations, not your whole system unless you tell it to)
Page File: On (set to the minimum of 16MB if you have a large amount of RAM, disabling not recommended)
    Prefetch: On
Superfetch: On (RAM is always faster than an SSD - use it)
System Restore: Off (with regular backups)
Browser Cache: RAM Only, Disk Cache Off (How to with Chrome)
Documents, Music, Pictures, Videos, Downloads to HDD (Public Libraries too, see above link about junctions)
    UAC: On!

but considering the amount of living space in North America, I think the trade off is worth it.

If you want crazy bandwidth, go to Sweden.

For my part I know nothing with any certainty, but the sight of the stars makes me dream.

Japan beats any countries when it comes to internet connection speeds but then again they very strict policy regarding filesharing. Our neighbour Sweden however isn't too bad either, with 10/10 and 100/100Mbit fibre connections available a bit all over the place and cheap too, some ISPs offer unlimited full duplex 100/100Mbit speed for ~$30 a month and 10/10 for around $20 a month, I've seen many users with monthly upload usage of several Terabytes a month and the ISPs don't take any action. That's like total opposite of what is seen in USA. Finland is too sparsely populated and doesn't get any funds from the government for broadband (unlike Sweden) so most people here are stuck to ADSL which is the connection type which is in clear domination over here. However it's nice to see the biggest ISP in my hometown is pushing for fibre connections where demand is big enough (you can fill in an online-form if you're interested in getting fibre optical access at your address) and that's a good initiative. Not like 24Mbit ADSL dl speed is like too slow but the price is still too expensive IMO at around 50 EUR a month, fibre once available would be cheaper.
