The SD series from Canon are the only compact cameras I would look at. Cameras like the G10 are just retarded. A Nikon D40 is CHEAPER! and takes better photos and offeres much more expandability.

I don't see how a G10 can be "retarded". Some people don't want to carry around a larger camera such as a DSLR.
    Canon 5D Mark II (Canon 50mm f/1.2L | Canon 135mm f/2L | Canon 24-70mm f/2.8L | Contax Zeiss 85mm f/1.4 | Zuiko 21mm f/3.5 | Crumpler 7MDH | Hitech filters + Lee Foundation Kit | B+W filters)
    Hasselblad 201F (Zeiss 80mm f/2.8 CF | 2x A12 Back | Domke F-4AF)
    Nikon F3HP (Nikkor 50mm f/1.2 | Nikkor 55mm f/1.2)

Different purposes. One you can pocket, the other you can't.

Is it worth wainting for the LX4?
    ePOWER EP-2000P10-T3 REVIEW at www.newegg.com

Pros: Powering my computer along with my air conditioner and my refrigerator, and I used it to jump start my truck once.

Cons: The only problem was the FBI at my door saying something about knocking out power for the east coast...not sure what thats about.

The G10 isnt that small, is overpriced, and you can get VERY similar image quality with the SD series. the big difference is the flash, but if you have a G10 with a flash, you should stop kidding yourself and get a low end DSLR.

Well, the G10 isnt really going to help you. It offers more easily ascessed controls, but not better technical image quality. As I alluded to above, the flash capability is what sets it apart from smaller P&S, but then the purpose of the G10 is lost.

the G10 isnt very pocketable unless you have cargo pants. With a pair of jeans or dress slacks, the G10 is too big.

Then you're left with the LX3 which is very limited zoom, which will upset a lot of people who want a megazoom megacamera.

There is a new camera that may be worth a look:

    Ricoh CX1

There's a G10 right next to my XSi and it is definitely small. It is easily small enough to slide into a backpack or a large pocket. Like I said before, not everyone wants to get a larger DSLR.

Which is why you suggest a camera that can't even give you anything clean/decent at base ISO?

Anything besides the Fuji and Sigma I suggested (in P&S) would probably either have perceivable noise at 64/100, or smudge the whole image until the noise is "gone"

Most cameras are almost that slow when shooting RAW anyway so that doesn't matter much.

I'm ordering one a DP1 soon as I get my offers from Universities and manage to settle my finances.

The LX3 has terrible optics too. Barrel distortion present when you use RAW. They brutally correct it in JPEG mode and smudge the image again.

is it me, or is there way too much pixel-peeping toms here muddying up a simple thread? not everyone is going to fight for the merits of a dslr with a good lens on it when that combo costs a lot more than people are willing to pay or care to even get interested in.

When you can snag a D40X or D60 + 18-55 VR for $400, why waste the same money on a much, much lesser camera?

Yes there is,but its important that opinions are expressed and a good sense of choice is given in these kind of threads.
Having said that,i'd say on the ops criteria, the LX3 will give you the prints you want.

is that a G10 in your pocket? or are you just happy to see me?

seriouly... if the G10 fits in your pocket, the your pants are about 10 sizes too big for you. i wouldn't even consider my SD880 ideal pocket size and the G10 is at least twice the size.

i agree that a p&s will offer no where near the possibilities of a dslr and in inferior in many ways; but a dslr in the hands of someone who doesn't care to pick up the skillset for it may as well have the worst camera on the market because the shots just won't be there for them.

i've always felt it awkward to suggest a dslr to people who wouldn't know where to start. they may lose interest quickly because it's a chore to take a photo compared to a decent p&s. target audience is key

also, macadamia, is it really necessary to muddle the conversation geared towards novices like that? you deserve a medal.

Even on auto it will take better pictures than anything else recommended at that price point. The manual controls are there for creative expansion, but the camera is very good on auto.

There's no sign of such a camera showing up in the near future so I'd say no.

If you're willing to wait the upcoming Samsung TL500 might be worthwhile. Should be out soon.

Nobody here mentioned the Canon S90 but it is definitely also worth checking out. Actually I'd take it over the Canon G10/G11 series due to it's faster lens and more compact body.

Otherwise I'd join the LX3-recommending crowd (I own one). It's a nifty little camera and it currently finds more use than my full size DSLR.

PS: I'd generally would recommend avoiding the megazoom cameras. They're bulky, have slow lenses and tiny sensors. If you're willing to carry extra bulk you might as well get a real 'camera'. ie. a DSLR.

If you still have not purchased one yet, ill recommend the LX3 / Canon S90. If I was to buy right now, Ill get the Canon S90 for its more useful zoom.

i got the wife the Lumix ZS3.
fantastic little camera and has some very inventive modes too. some that i wish a dslr had.
movie mode is damn fine too. can use mjpeg or avchd lite.

its very cheaply built externally but solid inside
it has a very wide angle lens with a super fantastic zoom and as always Lumix's superb image stabilizer.
