    Post D5 Top Performance Comparison

Alright, here is what you have all been waiting for...I'm not going to muck all this up with details, you can find the full write-up on my site, skinnee labs D5 Top comparison.

If you're looking for the individual reviews, here they are in alphabetical order.

    A look at the contenders.

    Test Methodology

The pump testing loop is a completely separate loop on the test bench. The pump test loop is comprised of a custom built half gallon PVC reservoir, and gate valve for controlling flow. Bitspower 1/2" High-Flow fittings were used for consistency across all D5 pump top tests. I use an assortment of measurement tools for pump testing, here is the list.

    • Power: Mastech HY3005D (0-30V, 0-5A) Variable DC Power Supply
    • Volt/Amp Measurement: Fluke 23 Series II Digital Multimeter
    • Flow: King Instruments 7520 Rotameter, 0.5-5 GPM, 10" Scale
    • Flow Control: 3/4" Inlet-Outlet Gate Valve.
    • Pressure: Dwyer 490-3 Hydronic (Wet/Wet) Digital Manometer 0.00-50.00 PSI

For each configuration tested, the loop was bled and ran for 20 minutes prior to measurements taken. After 20 minutes, power to the pump was shutoff, and the Manometer was reset to zero PSI. This step ensures a proper measurement of the total dynamic pressure for the pump is recorded. Voltage is adjusted to 12.00 volts in order to achieve a constant voltage across all tests, voltage was verified prior to the 2 minute runtime and verified before measurements were recorded. Also to eliminate and pressure variation, each flow setting was , given a 2 minute runtime before measurements were recorded. For each flow setting the PSI, Voltage and Amperage are recorded.

    Test Results

And there you have it, all the compiled data. Thanks for reading!

so basically the most simplest, straight forward designs tops the charts ...

i've never imagined minimalistic is the key

    Great review Skinnee, unbelievable work!
Detroit takes the cake, wow. I see some Detroit Thermo's in my future. The resemblance between Detroit and EK is uncanny

Nice review. The Detroit seem like the best under 2.0gpm after that the EK seem better. Very interesting. I think it is funny how poorly the Koolance top does, I mean it performs worse than the stock top.

The Koolance top is being redesigned. I shared my results with Koolance just after testing, and they expressed it was time to redesign the top for performance and not just fitting options.

One thing to note, remember typical loops run between 1.75 and 1.0 GPM. So look in that range for your typical loop pressure gains.

    Great review as always

Looks like there's really not too much to gain on the D5 other than flexibility, looks, and a (potential) drop in noise

D5 vs. DDC is planned and coming, I just have a grip of s775, s1366 CPU blocks and another radiator to testing preventing me from getting started.

I need more hours in the day and less time spent working.

For the D5 vs DDC round up, can you also do some sound measurements?

Thank you for the time and effort you put into this. I'm curious, how many hours do you estimate it took you to do this complete test and the writeup?

Each test takes about an hour, I run every test 3 times to ensure the data is accurate. 5 speed settings. Thats about 15 hours for each configuration, total of 8 configurations tested in this batch. Plus photos, color balancing, working the data in excel, saving charts to images and write-up. About 130-140 hours for the D5 tests. These are the type of tests you can't do anything else during too. With all that said, I enjoyed it and learned a ton while performing the tests.

Send it to me in PM first. I don't know what image/data you're talking about.

First, great review Skinnee much appreciated

And, I think Hondacity has overlaid Martin's DDC 3.2 PQ curves with Skinnee's data so people can get an idea of a comparison between the two pumps.

    Really interesting charts, thanks!

    Been waiting for that.

So EK top is my next purchase i guess. Cant get Detroit top in EU as easy and performance is very similar...

Skinee, can you comment on noise differences between the tops? Just your opinion is fine.

Thanks for the test skinnee. Seems fairly straight forward enough.
Here is a question for the creators of these blocks, why the heavy price?
The ddc tops are like $25, while the d5 top is $40.
Seems they would sell a heck of a lot more if they dropped the price to $25-30. The demand for the D5 top does not warrant the price.
