    SSD help

    Guys
I'm getting this drive Samsung 64GB 2.5" SATA-II SLC Solid State Hard Drive MCCOE64G5MPP-0VA00-64GB
I'm not finding a great deal of detailed information on it, and some benchmarks/reviews don't show it in too good light...

Any comments on this SSD? I'm getting them really cheap, ordered 1 already, but I think I'll phone up and change that to 2 units for RAID 0 on ICH9R.
    Thanks

The samsung slc series is a good reliable SLC SSD. You'll be happy with them. They do about 100MB/s linear Read and 80MB/s linear write. It's probably equivalent to the MOBI 3000 series SLC, with slightly slower response times. Maybe you could PM me and let me know what price you're getting them at. I might be interested in getting a few if there's a possibility-

    Hi.

Could you provide links to these reviews that do not cast it in a good light?

I think they provide roughly 50% of the performance of the Intel X25-E series in all areas except Server intensive I/O's where the Intel is miles ahead.... great buy for desktop / OS use

These drives are SLC and have 256mb onboard cache so they have no issues using onboard ICH9R...

It doesn't seem to help it at all though. Terribly slow small writes getting smoked by the velociraptor in some tests... I wouldn't get that drive unless you are getting it really cheap. And its about 30% of the performance of the X25-E.

Ok thanks guys, didn't realise they were on the market rebranded.

The reviews I found were from obscure sites since I used google.

As for price, UKers check out Novatech, these drives are priced around £380+, but they are being sold on Novatech for £115, surely a good buy One_Hertz?
Only problem, stock is extremely short, the 32GB version is practically sold out and the 64GB has very very low stock, they were only listed yesterday. I hope they still have some, going to phone up as soon as its 9am.

    edit - FFS its now £143 :/

    I also went for 1 64GB from Novatech @ £115.

    Here is a nice review:

    And Another:

    http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/...rive,2000.html

I bought this for my Netbook, lower power, lower heat, lower noise, faster than the WD 80gb 5400rpm I have in there.

I would wait for a while to get one for my desktop though.

I will see 4k-random-write-benches with this 256MB-cached SSD

    e.g. FC-Test, OS-Install (with stopwatch) etc.

It's the second best SLC I have tested (and I have tested a lot of them) after the X25-E. I have ordered 8 of them from the same source (£114/64Gb)

This is from a review* that I did, comparing a 128Gb MLC Samsung, a 64Gb SLC Samsung, a 16Gb Mtron Mobi 3525 and three Mtron Mobis 3525 in RAID0, a couple of months ago.

    Try a Memoright GT or a MTRON 7500 http://forum.ssdworld.ch/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=46
    But it´s expensive

I've tried the Memoright and I know that the Mtron Pro is top class, it's just that they're unfortunately priced the same (if not higher than) the Intel X25-E, which blows them to bits. I bought a 16Gb Memoright in September 2007 and paid more than I paid for the X25-E three months ago, only to RMA it twice in a period of 6 months (stopped being recognised in the BIOS) and then eventually get rid of it...

Memoright released 2 products in a period of 2 years and they haven't made a single attempt to make them more affordable.
On the other hand, I do respect Mtron, as they keep improving both their prices and their products. I could even go as far as to say that they have showed the way to the others

That said, I can't wait to see Mtron's response to the X25-E and the wave of high performance SSDs that is to follow, but I can't say that I expect much from Memoright. If they (MR) release any new products, it will probably be the same performance as the X25-E (capped by the SATA2 interface) and again probably twice as expensive :/

Yep . That's really cheap. Certainly a much, much better buy than the OCZ MLC stuff right now. I think a proper raid controller may be needed to help with the slow small writes though.

512b ramdom-write-results with the Memoright are appr. 5x higher than a MTRON Mobi.

Any recommendations for a RAID 0 card (2 ports) that has a good performance/price ratio?
    I'm thinking around ~£50 (~$70)

If anyone has the time either from these retailers

You won't find one that's suitable for SSDs Lucky. At least not as far as I've seen.

Really? :/ but these SSDs aren't using Jmicron controllers, they have their own cache and using Samsung controllers.

Otherwise it shouldn't be worse than onboard right? My optical goes a bit crazy if I use AHCI/RAID mode on the ICH9R, and on this motherboard the jmicron SATA controller is servicing 2 e-sata ports on the back panel (I really do think IP35-Pro is lacking severely in some areas...)

No, it will be worse than onboard. You can get a Dell perc 5/i cheap from eBay - although I don't know if they're legally obtained. Apparently some modification is needed, those cap out at around 400MB/sec. You -might- find a hybrid RAID controller that is able to do the job, but there is little or no information on the maximum capacities of them. You could theoretically use a single x1 PCIe lane to transmit the data up to 250MB/sec. But in practice there is an overhead (I don't know what it is) so I suspect anything over 200MB/sec would be a "good" result. I've seen someone (a hardware reviewer) get 200MB/sec from a RocketRaid 3120, which Scan sell for £130.

Other than that the cheapest "proper" solution seems to be the Adaptec 2405, which is around £200 and will see you up to roughly 800MB/sec. (If my memory serves me right).

I'm sure there will be a hybrid RAID card out there that could do two drives justice, nobody seems to know what it is though.

A Hybrid RAID card is one which allows you to boot from the array, but does not have an onboard processor and offloads the processing to your CPU. A hardware RAID card (all the cards I have mentioend are) does the processing. Software RAID is where there is no RAID controller in hardware at all, and it's all done with software, you can't boot from that. Well, I say you can't boot but theoretically you could boot from another device which could load the software to run the software RAID. I've never heard of this in practice though.

I see where you are coming from

key point is this SSD is rated 100MB/sec linear read max theoretical, benchmarks/real world use is under that slightly around 91MB/sec, so RAID 0 would be a under 200MB/sec easy (this is the highest throughput spec for the drive, linear write is rated 80MB/sec)

I'm not really looking for upgradeability, future proofing, or using more drives.

There isn't any hardware raid card, PCI-E 1x for around that price?

The only hardware RAID card I saw with an x1 connection was the RocketRaid one I mentioned.

I managed to get hold of a brand new 1430SA cheap (they're about 70 quid I think). It's an x4 hybrid RAID card. I believe Highpoint also make hybrid RAID cards that might do the job. I don't expect the card to do well for the 4 Vertex drives I have on order (800MB/sec + ), perhaps it'd do 200MB/sec though.

Perhaps an option for you would be to get a cheap nasty SATA card to stick your other drives on and try the motherboard for RAID with no other drives connected?
