    nh-u9b vs zalman 9500?

i currently have a zalman 9500 for my phenom II 940. in my other thread i was looking for a cooler that fits into my case and the nh-u9b happens to be the same height as my zalman. i am planning on going push/pull if it is worth it with fans like the zm-f2 led ones or something similar. but before i get it i want to know how it performs against my current cooler. after looking for reviews on websites i couldn't really find any that had the two in one review so im not exactly sure how it will come out.

I don't have a U9B personally but I do have a Thermalright Ultima-90 which is on par with the U9B from the reviews I've read.

Long story short, the U9B will be a ways better than the Zalman 9500 and quieter too if thats your thing. Zalman's blossom design is dated and the performance is not all that great by today's standards. Many XSers will agree with that.

I also agree the circular Zalman 9500 is less than optimal, my Tuniq Tower 120 is a beast and doesn't even let my 4.0ghz E8500 hit 50C after 11 hours of Orthos Dual. I know guys with the exact same chip and speed with Zalman 9500 that load 15-20C higher than I do.

Look for a design with an aluminum/copper combo for optimal heat flow. Copper absorbs heat, but can dissipate it and aluminum is optimal at dissipation, which results in an optimal combination. The only downside to my Tuniq 120 is the size and having to remove the mobo to install the back mounting plate.

yea from the reviews i saw that had the ultima 90 and the u9b in them they performed both about the same. not many reviews include the zalman 9500 tho. i know the u9b will be better but im not sure if it is worth the money and i like how the zalman looks. thanks for the input guys.

edit: if i would get the nh-u9b i would go push/pull with 2 zm-f2gl fans.

You can always try it first on your PII 940, see how it cools before you decide to buy the U9B.

Try the Zalman 9500 first and see if the temps are to your liking.

I'm assuming you haven't built your PII rig yet?

no i alrdy have my phenom II rig and i currently have a zalman 9500 on it. im just not sure if it is worth the money to get the new cooler and fans for just a few C. i know the u9b is better just not sure by how much. seems like with 2 zm-f2s in push pull i should get a decent amount.

Have you thought any about the Xigmatek SD964?

    I've got it on my little X2 5600+ @ 3.2 and it's @ 54c with 1hr OCCT.

I don't think it will do too bad on thee PHII either, I mean, 4 cores vs 2 cores but it's 45nm and mines 90nm.

ahh, I see how your stuck then. Well there's always going the water route

All joking aside, thats why when it comes to air you get the best and stop (in your price range, of course ). Because just like water, it'll get expensive in the long run once you start to get a feel for it.

Is there a reason in the U9B? Case limitations?

yea its a good cooler but the problem is that i want the air to blow out the back of the case instead of up into the psu. i bought an ocz vendetta which i found out after i got it that it doesn't blow out the back.

yea i thought about getting water about a year ago but i just never jumped into it. the reason why i picked the u9b was because i needed a cooler that could blow out the back on am2 and that my nzxt alpha can only hold coolers up until at 135mm or something. the zalman 9500 and u9b are both 125mm tall so i know the u9b will fit. the u9b appears to be the best cooler that fits in my case and can blow out the back but if anyone else has any other coolers im open to them. the reason why im being a little bit more picky and cautious this time is because i have an unopened vendetta and i don't want to waste any more money . just want to make sure the choice is worth it because if i can actually get temps 10C better on load then im all for it. the zalman 9500's fan doesn't move that much air and the u9b is designed a lot better so im sure push pull with 2 zm-f2s would be much better and maybe even quieter.
