    When my computer is shutdown my netgear gigabit switch starts blinking like crazy on the port that its connect to!

    Ethernet stats look something like this:
    /********************************************/
    Link Status : Up
    Totals (Since boot or last clear) :
    Bytes Rx : 3,482,122,127 Bytes Tx : 1,241,547,804
    Unicast Rx : 470,814,223 Unicast Tx : 283,971,524
    Bcast/Mcast Rx : 67,214 Bcast/Mcast Tx : 4,213,629
    Errors (Since boot or last clear) :
    FCS Rx : 0 Drops Rx : 0
    Alignment Rx : 0 Collisions Tx : 0
    Runts Rx : 0 Late Colln Tx : 0
    Giants Rx : 0 Excessive Colln : 0
    Total Rx Errors : 0 Deferred Tx : 0

    /********************************************/

    I got these from my switch, you should be able to do the same on any decent switch.

    Flashing lights like that could mean a layer 2 or 1 problem.

    this is not a cisco switch. im pretty sure there is no managment to it...

    i dont think its a broadcast storm, even though i do have two other switches connected to it, but in wireshark i do see STP flying around. and it only does it when the nic is off.

    Its a strange issue.

    Is it the same MB as the one in your sig?
    Code:
    Mobo: Asus Maximus Formula (SE) BIOS 0903
    Is the power to your MB turned off? Completely form the wall? Could be some sleep mode activity?

    Strange network traffic makes me think of viruses & trojans. Try connecting your computer directly to another computer (using NAT) and sniff the network traffic, then you might be able to figure out what is happening.

    STP should generally broadcast every 2 seconds, is it that often or is it more?

    Perhaps what you're seeing is the NIC being effectively asleep, but gets pulses and wakes up enough to see if it's WoL traffic - triggers STP - then goes to sleep and the whole thing just keep repeating. Something like that maybe.

    Viruses tend to not work so well when the computer is off. Lack of processing ability and such.
    Dual CCIE (Route\Switch and Security) at your disposal. Have a Cisco-related or other network question? My PM box is always open.

    Xtreme Network:
    - Cisco 3560X-24P PoE Switch
    - Cisco ASA 5505 Firewall
    - Cisco 4402 Wireless LAN Controller
    - Cisco 3502i Access Point

    Yes, I am aware of how computers work.
    Since there is plenty of network activity the computer is not completely turned off. As riptide suggested the computer might have entered some kind of sleep mode where the CPU still is executing instructions.

    I sure hope not, my fans and water pump are off

    I will wireshark it tonight just to see what kind of traffic it is.
