these things like being cold... i'd at least hook up the water and see if its still a dud. the freezer 64 is a good h/s, but better for x2's IMO. i think something a little beefier would probably help

Temps of chip and overall temps?

The art of ocing requires you to increase clocks while maintaining a delicate balance of increased volts and lower than average temps.

Your OC will always be hindered by all overclockers worst enemy, temps....regardless of brand.

Its cold out open a window, or go get a dryer vent hose and stick it out a window and place it over your cpu fan, then OC, find your max. then you know what a chip is capable of and you can purchase something to cool it accordingly.

A prime example, check out the temps....http://members.cox.net/chewxs/4230%20pi%201m.JPG

    cybercat ->

set cpu state: p-1 (you can also play with this to see if it does anything for u; it did for me surprisingly), set NB to 2.0GHZ, HEX: 1D, leave HT link on auto, set auto for vcore, set dimm latency to 195 for all dimms (for now, since your running 8gb). u might need to +/- your dimm voltage. set ram timings to 5-5-5-18-23 for now. cnq should be disabled.

now try to see how high u get on stock v's (which is 1.31 for the dfi). go up to +50mv (sparingly; i.e. set +25 test, then +50) then observe how much more u get (this is stock v for the cpu).

dont use HT oc'ing for now, since it adds more stress (high HT) to the IMC needing more NB juice to be stable. u can sort that later.. and or use the dividers if you know your ram can handle it. try setting maxmemclk and your divider option for the option to get tighter timings.

u can also try setting pci-e to 101.

The advice pershoot gave is all very good!

The other thing I noticed conserning your reboot problems sound very similar to what was happening to me on the Biostar 790GX A2+. I was running that on a bench and even though I had Mem sinks on the FETS and a fan blowing on the PWM section of the board it did the exact same thing. Everytime it happened I'd do the finger test on the FETs & Chokes, they were SMOKING hot...

This seems to be a common problem with most AM2+ boards, putting a fan over the PWM section of the board will probably help. To be quite honest I think most Mobo Mfgs have cheaped out on AMD boards. Hopefully PhII will make them take notice and release some decent boards with quality components and good cooling solutions...

Phenoms are definetly tricky to OC, but to me thats the biggest part of the fun..

1.45 Vcore may be a little low considering it's only .1v over stock, as long as your temps stay good under load you may want to bring that up a little. AMD even says max Vcore is 1.55 and I'm sure that's a conservative number...

C2Q is probably much easier to OC, not sure about I7 but I would assume the addition of the IMC on die makes it more difficult too..

If crossfire dosen't scale in 3dmark-06 then you tell me how i got 21230 points pull down 135 FPS score in canyon flight (test of crossfire) all with using 3850 video cards . The ORB top score for 4830 with a Phenom II 940 cpu is 19000 + for 2 cards . With what Oldguy932 is getting with his cpu i bet he could hit 20,000 with just 2 video cards .

65 load and the chipset is usually a hair under 70. This is using a Scythe Zipang with MX-2.

With your advice I got a floor fan and stuck it next to my case. The CPU never went down more than a few degrees but my chipset would go down as much as 16 degrees. I also tried setting the CPU state to P1 like pershoot suggested. Nothing would get 3.6GHz stable.

I've already found my max with stock vcore which is 3.3GHz. As I increased the clockspeed I only upped the vcore one notch when it was unstable. Standard OCing procedure. As the CPU-Z screenshot indicates, I'm only using the multiplier to OC.

Too bad i cant adjust the voltage lower.. 55C at load
    http://faior.miumau.net/3.6stable.JPG

Pretty weird that I could run this CPU 3.8 and 3.9GHz, but now it can only do 3.6 anymore..it just BSODs if I try 3.8GHz in windows loading screen, everytime. Earlier it had no problems even in gaming.
    Nothing interesting here.

I dont think its the Mobo if you use Dfi 790FXB.... But unintall AOD its dont work good. Use K10STAT and bios only! , what idle/load temps do you have? (1.35v/1.45v)

70c with 790fxb-m2rsh? That almost sounds like theirs no thermal pads, paste or anything else. I hope the mosfets got somthin at least! I know people said those chip sets can run fine in till 90c-100c, but idn about overclocking. If I had to guess there's something up with your NB-mosfets heat sink.

    >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

i hear ya on that, same problem with my DFI 790fx-m2r, daymn they get hot, and definately the reason the PWM on the board goes wacko when stressing, i wuz doing an OCCT run and keeping as eye on it, the PWM kept climbing, soaring over 80*c in just a minute or so, added a fan, lowered temps dramatically (about 30*c)....this is a huge concern...i am sure the board will fry sooner or later.....

i have no idea what the temps were when i left her unattended during some earlier runs (i would imagine REALLY high), but the screen was blank, like the MB just disconnected itself from the loop.....

    laterzzzz...........

Cyber have you played with ram at all? A lot of times as you push a chip with a memory controller as a side effect it pushes the ram harder due to the IMC, this can cause instability. Before i even install windows with amd chips i sit in memtest for a while as every chip is different and plays with ram differently.

As I OC i will continue to use memtest, you really dont have to sit through a whole session either, most of the time you can run 3 loops of test 5, thats usually first to show signs of instability.

Kinda like what people used to do with 3d01 and only loop nature with high oc's before they bothered a full run.

Dumo, my boards ordered, Solution for PWM take the heatpipe off, turn it around and resinstall it on PWM, have the NB hang off the top of mb, Put a fan on it.

I don't know how much you love your TT BT but I already started to modify mine, bent the pipes straight up reinstalled the shroud, just need to make a mounting kit for it to fit on the NB. delta fan and done.

What he was trying to say is that if I go from 1 card to 2 cards, 13k would be able to go to 19k. I'm trying to get a few extra points now with my nb multi bumped up by 1 so its at 3.3ghz or so. Dropped htt down to 25 because it first froze during the cpu tests for '06, so I figured I'd finally get a full run of '05 in now. It also bumped my AQ3 up to 159k from 156k.
Not much to say right now.

Yah I know that, just think he's being a little optimistic, add 1 card with lower end models and it scales decent, add 3rd card and scaling isn't as linear. I think thats evident with bens score of only 23,324 with 3 4870's.....

Vantage is more lienar with scaling IMO.

I wanted to update folks on my OC experience. I mentioned earlier that I was getting 3.5ghz with stock voltage, but when I went into Fallout and a couple of other apps it would occasionally crash. So I upped the voltage.. But I figured since I upped the voltage, I should at least try to get some more speed out of it.

Well I tweaked and fiddled with voltages, etc, but the most I can get absolutely stable in Vista64 (with 8Gb of RAM) is ~3.63ghz. I know I *should* be able to get higher, etc, but I haven't been able to pull it off. I'm at work now and can't post the confirmation, but I will later. Also if anyone has any tips, let me know!

My definition of stability is no reboots or hangs whatsoever in any application (games as well, which can be a big deal).

I want to also note that the OCZ Reaper memory I have seems to always be reported as DDR2 800 in every mb I've tried it in (and believe me I've tried it in at least 3 different mbs). I feel like I was kinda cheated on that; I probably won't be buying any more memory from them.

One more thing; it would be really cool if there was a way of knowing which component/components were holding you back. I had a couple of ahci64***(don't remember the exact thing) errors. There were also a couple of sound corruption issues (followed by crashes).

Let me say that I'm still very happy; my system is noticeably more responsive than the 3.0ghz 9850 I was running. It's butter smooth. I can't wait to try this under Windows 7 64bit.
