What can I expect from an old Intel Northwood 2.4GHz P4?

    Hey guys,

Well I've flown home for the festive season and I had to leave the water cooled beast... Needless to say I'm missing the Quad 4GHz and GTX 280 love but in the mean time I thought I'd try and make the most of what I'm stuck with... My old PC from 2002 >.<

    Specs:
    Asus P4B533
    Intel Pentium 4 Northwood 2.4GHz (18x multi)
    2x512MB DDR PC-3200
    PNY GeForce 6800 GT

    Cooling:
    Scythe Katana II

What can I realistically expect to get from this setup? So far on a very quick OC I was stable at 2.79GHz by bumping the FSB up to 155 (stock 133) and the Vcore straight to 1.65V (from 1.5V). I'll probably try and push it a little further tonight but I've read horror stories from overclocking Northwoods, any input?

Also, what settings might help in overclocking this baby? The BIOS isn't quite as sophisticated as the Striker II Extreme one :P

You should get 3.01-3.12gig fairly comfortably, and with good stability - good ewater should take you to 3.25-3.4'ish, and VapoChill anything up to 3.75gig, with good stability.

Keep CPU at around 1.53Vcore max on good air or water, and then up to 1.65 with phase-change - if you want some more life out of the NW.

    Those were very good chips

ah, no its not.. read his OP - he said FSB stock is 133, thus 533.. s478 HT CPUs had 800/200 FSB

the only way the cpu has ht is if the OP has muddled up!

Thanks for the replies so far, I'm afraid I don't think this revision of the NW had HT as that only came out when the 3GHz stock CPUs came out give or take.

When you mention max 1.53Vcore, isn't that really low considering stock voltage is 1.5V? Hell my Bios supports up to 1.7V with the jumper on safety, and up to 1.9V if I flip a jumper...

What I really need is a quick pointer on to what else might need a bit more voltage as I don't remember seeing a NB voltage in the BIOS and I'm having trouble booting past 160FSB with already 1.65Vcore.

oh trust me there were NW 2.4ghz HT cpus

    NW HT CPUs:
    2.4
    2.6
    2.8
    3.0
    3.2
    3.4

    Prescott s478 HT CPUs:
    2.8
    3.0
    3.2
    3.4

    Prescott HT s478 CPUs: 1MB L2 cache, 90nm, SSE3 - NW HT CPUs: 512KB L2 cache, 130nm, no SSE3

ur mobo bios might not have NB V control
edit: & yes 1.53V is not much of an increase from 1.5V.. my s478 CPU runs stock @ 3.4ghz/1.55V - so go on, shove some more V's thru!

    edit2: ewiz.com has a darn nice selection of s478 HT CPUs, including the 2.4 & 2.6 HT:

I have a Northwood 2.4 B0 and MSI 845E Max and anything higher than 2.718 Ghz requires a Vcore increase to at least 1.52 V and the max possible Prime95-stable OC is 2.808 Ghz and even then, it's borderline, I can run Prime 95 all night long and wake up to it still chugging along, but when the temps outside go up just somewhat, Prime95 gives me an error.

I had 2 2.4c that would both do over 3.5 and the main one would bench 3dmark2k1 at 305+ fsb and I think it was my MB that was the limiting factor since it only needed 1.6v to do it (no increase in voltage helped from that point).

All my older Northwoods were limited by my old MB/ram (Th7II and rdram) combo of 162fsb and all would do that 1.6 1.8 amd a 2.26.

Tiro..........I skipped the generation of prescott, and ceder mill due to the extreme heat the prescott's put out, it was then I switched to the AMD 939 Athlon64 platform. Were those Ceder-mill CPU's as good OCers as the NW's were? And were they faster then NW clock for clock?

I was doing 3.8ghz to 4.0ghz with a Northwood P4. Excellent CPU. Still running it infact in my ABIT IC7-G Max 2 board. I'm thinking of selling the whole setup for $300 to $250. It's got an XFX 7950GT card in it too. Good system.

I loved my NW 3.4GHz as-well. Well that was until I found out how much faster the AMD FX55 was! I had my P4 NW 3.4GHZ @ 4.12GHz and the FX55 was still faster @ 2.9GHz plus I had SLi!

Well both cd and prescott were still netburst cpus.. I think both had an incy wincy bit more going for them.. The biggest diff iirc was cd came with 64bit support

Iirc NWs capped out approx ~4ghz.. cd's clocked a fair bit further - the later model cd's came out in 65nm.. Iirc ppl were getting ~5ghz with water
