    better ddr2?

looking at picking up a set (or 2) of 2x2gb ddr2 to replace my g.skills (looking to achieve 1066+ mhz) and was looking at either the ---

    2x2gb 800mhz c4 ballistix BL2KIT25664AA80A (that supposedly use new ic's that arent trash ) ---

    or 2x2gb mushkin 1000mhz c5 redline 996593 ---

    or 2x2gb mushkin 800mhz c4 xp2 996580 ---

or any other sets in that $50-$65 range...

which of these kits do you guys think would clock the best? they're getting used with my phenom and on my mobo i think the loosest i can set the trc in bios is in the mid 40's so if these kits need loose trc (50+) to get some decent clocks well thats what i'd like to know.

    thanks

oh ya and i cant do the tall heatspreaders cuz of heatsink... i was thinking about getting some pi series and just taking the spreaders off but if those g.skills are anything like the rest they will need a very loose trc to go 1000mhz+ --- i know ive seen some people also mention for mushkin users to drop trc down to the 50's to get more mhz and looking around im seeing a few results of the ballistix @ 1066+ w/ trc ~30 so i think i am leaning toward them right now.

why dont u use slots 2/4 or cut the top off they arnt expensive and the warranty dosnt seam worth it to me since u have to pay for shipping

and ur thinking of powerchips those are the new promos that the 1150/1200mhz kits use, also why cant u use tall ram i cant see it getting in the way of the xigmatek

this is your current setup right, but with an x2

IMO I'd avoid that mushkin kit - I know I had very bad luck on it operating at anything near 1066 - if you hunt hard enough I've seen 1066 kits around going for nearly your $50 target pricing

but as stated before I'd look at that g.skill kit - but who am I to talk - I'm still pushing 4x1 gigs out of choice

Thats strange, I could easily run Mushkin Redline's at 1069MHz (5-5-5-15) with only 2.0v. I am currently running at 1000MHz (5-5-5-12) with 1.95v.

I'm open that I had a dud kit - it would run stock settings at 1.9v no problem at all - runs ddr2-880 at 1.8v as well on a crappy ECS board

    I'd recommend 2x2GB OCZ ReaperX PC6400 with EPP 4-4-3.

My kit can do 1066MHz 5-5-4 rock solid with 2.1v, and I've benched with them at over 1100MHz 5-5-4 2.2v. It's a great 2x2GB kit and if I'm not mistaken it's not too expensive.

what do you guys have trc set to on the mushkins @ 1066+?

here is a pic of my heatsink over my ram... i know even if i just grab 1 2x2gb kit now ill get another sooner or later so i want to avoid tall heatspreaders.

and what im talking about w/ trc is this, here is the g.skill 1000mhz c5 ram spd chart - see how for 1000mhz the like 45+ trc, and more mhz just means looser trc... im pretty sure all g.skill are like that, my 4x1gb 1066 kit i have now is i know that

then here is an example of the 800mhz c4 ballistix spd chart where they say for 1000mhz trc only needs to be set to 30

so does anyone have the spd chart for the pi series & the mushkin xp2's and redlines?

    thanks again

My G-skill 1000's could not get over 933 without being unstable.. Most G-skill don't overclock well. so those Black PI's will be good. but don't expect to go over 900 or so with them.

I've heard good things about the Mushkin redlines.. and I've heard GREAT things about there XP line.. this guy swears on the XP Acents said they are simply some of the best RAM he's ever owned.

no offense but u have a POS board, and every gskill 1000 that ive seen or people i know do at least 1040, and if u know how to clock ram u can pull allot out of anything (i got 1080mhz cas5 out of HNL micron, its only supposed to go to 1000 max), and the pi black is a promos performance based kit with 4-4-4-12 and the other kits with those chips have looser timings and equivalent clocks for the timings then a 1200mhz kit, i would almost guarantee 1100mhz cas5 on it for an intel system on a solid p35/45 or x38/48 with good ram options

and all of the ram u mentioned is powerchips and will all clock about the same typically some ware from 1080-1160 cas 5

and i dont know how things will go on amd but amd loves cas 4 from what ive seen and that pi dark will do 4-4-4-12 at 1000mhz if u are lucky and 1000mhz 5-4-4-15 if u arnt and thats still great

you say no offense, but you sure don't come off nice.

My board isn't the best.. but it's not a POS.. I'm able to clock a Quad to 4.205 ghz on it.. and my new Corsair Dom's are running at 1066 MHz with 5-5-4-15 with no problems and I've yet to try for better... so it was the G-skill.. not my board. I tried everything on those chips to get higher. I'm not saying ALL G-skill are bad. I was just saying mine were no good. and yea I know the XP line has Powerchips. they are probably the same chips in my Dom's.. but I was only stating that my friend said they were amazing chips. thats all....

edit* also I've heard good things about the promos chips, but if they are that good why has no one bought those for such a great price?
oh and I have the DT 440 headphones.. they are amazing. I'd like the 770's, or the 990's would be really nice.

sorry, here is what i meant more tolerant sounding

your board is not reliable or stable so if u mess up one setting or dont use an XMP profile then u wont be getting good ram clocks since u wont compensate for voltage droop/drop or set the proper sub timings and that NB is atrocious unless u set its internal clock multi set right it will overclock the NB clock if u arnt on a common stap, its a problem with all NV chipsets on the intel platform with ddr2 and i hate to see a ram kit be negative to a whole company based on a bad platform and user error. not to mention that they are voltage and heat sensitive and have bad vreg and are rated for 30c higher than the parts that they are made of are rated over 60-70c they will degrade but they run at 80+ with the advised voltages for high ram clocks

and those promos chips are in the higher 1100-1200 cas 5 kits that are sold out all of the time its just people look and see 900mhz but dont look at the cas 4 timings, its just like with the GMH/GKX kits a few years ago 1100+ mhz were always bank and sold out but the 667mhz cas3 is a higher bin than 1066 cas5 but the 667mhz kits sold for half of the price

and sorry for being a but ive been having the insomnia and i did say no offense so u could tell that it was going to be somewhat mean spirited from the first phrase and brace, but i have no pity left for people who cant oc and or use NV chipsets its so much trouble dealing with/fixing them

well.. i see your point on the RAM, and you don't want a "Entire Company" to be called out on it.. I wasn't saying they were bad. I've used G-skill in the past more than a few times. and I love G-skill. but those sticks weren't anything special.. at all.

I was simply stating that the Corsair Dom's are nice and stable at 1066 with no problems, and even at 1000 Mhz also. while the G-skill I tried forever to get that high and never got over 1000. I was only stating what I've had and been able to do with this board. Thats all.

So what board under $200 would you recommend then thats good in both Quad clocking, and memory clocking?

    WOW... you guys done?

lets see, g.skills like loose trc! 45+ for 1000mhz 47+ for my 1066 sticks (that do 900mhz+ @ 4.4.4.12 no sweat)

my mobo only goes up to 42 trc for 1066 divider! makes g.skill buggy!

    im not getting g.skills!

now, back to the question, does anyone know what trc's are needed for 1066mhz+ for mushkin redlines & xp2's??? i found an amd guy who is using the 1066mhz patriots and they only need 30trc for 1066mhz like the crucials.

now im leaning toward the patriots 1066 for $65 and the crucial 800 for $50... still would like to hear about the mushkins timings because i have heard good things abou thier ram

What do you mean, Are you guys done. We were simply having a discussion. Thats all. can't people have different views on things without it being angry. I was just trying to get info and mention my experience with my G-skill's.

My G-Skill also didn't like a low trc.. I don't remember where they were set at though. I will say my Corsair Dominators are running perfectly fine at 1066 Mhz right now at 5-5-5-15-22.. thats a low trc.. 22.

Thats pretty good. and I've yet to try and oc them, but I'm pretty sure sure they can do better. My friend that swears by the Mushkin XP's I could ask how the timings are and see what he says.

that would be awesome if you could ask him, or if he has the 1066's just ask him what the trc is on the spd tab of cpuz... im pretty much down to ballistix 800's and patriot 1066's and maybe mushkins but all the other sticks are too tall or need too loose of trc.

u can flash the trfc to do like 55 with spd tool, or use memset and amd overdrive to set the timings then up the multi

and for a board under $200, there is the biostar tforce p45 the dfi DK p45/UT p45 t2r, asus p5q-E or higher, gigabyte p45 ds4p/ds3r, foxconn ELA. it just depends on how many options u want and what % of them u have to set

I'd rather run Nvidia also.. and it would be SLI soon. I'm about to get a second GTX260 now they are cheaper.

and I'm waiting to hear back from my friend about those timings.. ok OP. I'll let ya know.

    The 900 Pi Blacks evidently don't like cas5 and won't hit 1066.
GSkill is too stingy with their binning to allow many 1000 MHz kits get made with ICs that can hit 1066 so PQs are out.
Try the Dominators at $39 after MIR: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820145214
    Those will hit 1100 easy...probably 1120-1150 MHz.
