Launch of The Clean Energy Project

    New WCG project

World Community Grid is pleased to launch the The Clean Energy Project by Harvard University Department of Chemistry and Chemical Biology Clean Energy Project, Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA. The mission of The Clean Energy project is to discover organic materials to create a more efficient and lower cost solar cell. This in turn has the potential of improving the quality of the air in all regions of the world.

If a member contributes a minimum of 14 days of CPU Run Time to this project, they will receive a Clean Energy Project badge on their member statistics page and next to their member name when they post in the forums. There is a different badge for each research project and beta testing.

In addition to providing information about this project, we have created a forum for discussions about the The Clean Energy project. To participate in this forum, please press the Forums button in the upper navigation bar or click here. Only forum authors with the title "Clean Energy Project Scientist" are authorized to comment as representatives of the research organization: Harvard University (Cambridge, Massachsetts, USA).

The Clean Energy is the eleventh research project to be launched on World Community Grid and one of six projects currently active. The other five active research projects are: Help Conquer Cancer (launched November, 2007), Discover Dengue Drugs – Together (launched August, 2007), Human Proteome Folding - Phase 2 (launched July, 2006), FightAIDS@Home (launched November, 2005), and Nutritious Rice for the World (Launched May, 2008). For more detailed information and FAQs about each of these projects, please click on the Research button in the upper navigation bar or click here. We thank all of our members for their valuable contributions to the projects to date and hope you will continue to help us process those, as well as this latest project.

Because there are six research projects running on World Community Grid, your grid agent could receive work units from any of the projects. If you prefer, you may elect to focus your computer's time on only particular projects. To do so, press the My Grid button in the upper navigation bar and select My Projects or click here. To read more specifics on the system requirements for The Clean Energy Project and the other projects, click here.

If you are already a member of World Community Grid, there's nothing that you have to do to prepare for the The Clean Energy Project. The next time your grid agent communicates with the servers, it will send you a work unit from one of the projects at random for which your machine meets the minimum requirements and according to your project participation preference. To know which project you are running, please double-click on World Community Grid icon in the system tray, and you will see the title of the project in the display.

    Questions?
If you have any questions, World Community Grid provides you with four methods of obtaining assistance: (1) Review the FAQs found in the Help section of the website; (2) Review the forums to see if anyone has asked/answered the question that you have; (3) Ask the question in World Community Grid's Clean Energy Project forum found here, and a Community Advisor or a more experienced member will provide an answer; or (4) Send an email to the support desk from the Contact Us link found at the bottom of every page of the website (except in the forums).

    Thank you!
For now, the Clean Energy project will only be available for the Windows platform. We have a bit more testing to do for Linux and Mac and expect to have this proeject available for the Linux and Mac platforms during the week of December 8, 2008. Thank you for your patience.

You can read more about the goals of this project here.

We are living in the Age of Energy. The fossil fuel based economy of the present must give way to the renewable energy based economy of the future. Getting there is the grandest challenge humanity faces. Chemistry can help meet this challenge by discovering new materials that efficiently harvest solar radiation, store energy for later use, and reconvert the stored energy when needed.

The Clean Energy project uses computational chemistry and the willingness of people to help look for the best molecules possible for: organic photovoltaics to provide inexpensive solar cells, polymers for the membranes used in fuel cells for electricity generation, and how best to assemble the molecules to make those devices. By helping us search combinatorially among thousands of potential systems, you can contribute to this effort.

Hell, anything that can lower the cost of solar I'm in favor of.

A bit of irony, but that's the way that civilizations advance. Anyways--I'll continue to do HCC. If I had an additional computer worth crunching on, I'd add it to this project.

Well think about it this way... more efficient solar cells = more clean power to feed more crunchers.
World Community Grid - come join a great team and help us fight for a better tomorrow![size=1]

I've always beleived the future is in solar energy and the benefits are many and related to what we do but the costs have to be reduced.
If for the sake of argument I could eliminate my $300.00/month elec bill thats $3600.00 per year. With that $3600.00 I could add 2 Nehalems per year at no additional cost and bring the benefit of those two added machines to the cancer and aids projects.
This goes hand in hand with what we do.
The question is how much of my resources do i put on this project?
I think I'll stick one machine on it for the time being as like you, my main interest is in the HCC project.

The future has to be solar. As much as I love nuclear for the energy concentration, having solar panels on commercial and residential buildings is our best path to being energy-independent. If we figure out fusion, we have clean energy for centuries.

Anyways--my main interest is definitely HCC. However, this project and the rice project both beg attention as well, for the pure benefit it will do to hundreds of millions of people. Not to be offensive, but the AIDs project and various others are unimportant to me.

You should pay a visit to Europe then I guess? The USA is quite cheap compared to most EU countries.

But anyways, I think I'll be adding this project to one of my profiles and see how it does. It seems like a worthwile project to me.

EDIT: I am running a few WUs now, I'll leave them running overnight and will report how they did. There is a quorum of 2 for these units, but they take signifgicantly longer then all the other units. I am running the units on my laptop, which usually does a cencer unit in a little over 4 hours, but these are projected to take nearly 13! The mem usage is very nice though, as it seems the WU hasn't used more then 30MBs yet. Then again, that might increase over time. I'll report back, now off to bed.

it's cheaper to use coal and nuclear

if US decides to dedicate themselves to an environmental guardian rather spending heavily on USD1 trillion annual for human culling ... it should able to save the Earth

I am hesitant adding anything. As I said before--if I had more power, I would add it to this project. If anyone wants to donate machines--feel free. I can run internet and power to 3+ more.

Yup, currently, but coal wont last forever and the cost to get it is bound to increase as they will eventually have to get it from more and more remote locations and with nuclear there is still the unsolved problem of the waste, so finding a way to drive down the cost of solar power can only be good in the long run.

Yeah, I've got a few profiles set to run both HCC and CE, but I am getting a lot more HCC at the moment. It seems the priority of this project isn't as high as the others, or there just isn't a lot of work available.
