I reduced the startup screen to fit here, but take a look. I'm a n00b to graphics programs.

This one isn't like Paint Shop (though in the right hands I'd guess it could do similar things) - it's more like a virtual reality creation/rendering program. It will be a while before I understand how to really use it, just playing at this time.

Plus, it comes with a built-in tutorial to get you started. This is one program that makes me want to run at least a gig of memory. It doesn't seem to badly constrained (yet!) with a tbred at 2.5 GHz, but with "only" 512m on my rig I really can't do much else when Maya is running.

For screenshots I use Windows Alt-PrintScrn and then pasting into Irfanview or xnview, both free. I used Irfanview for the SS above, saved as PNG files.

    xnview: http://www.xnview.com/

Another good program, one that's a free analog to Paint Shop is The GIMP. Linux users might already know about it, but there's also a version for windows.

    Linux (and general linkage): http://www.gimp.org/
    Windows: http://www2.arnes.si/~sopjsimo/gimp/#gtk

Less daunting than Maya, and it also handles screenshots, but that's using a sledgehammer to swat flies

Maya is for 3d modeling/animation, i dont use maya, if you wanna learn 3d modeling it is ebtter to start with 3d studio max, it is more for beginners but it is still very difficult to use. I bought a book for it and i am pretty good at it now.

3ds max isnt necesarily for beginners and is some ways just as hard as maya. 3ds max is the basis for game design so learn that if that is your focus. For beginers i recomend Cinema 4D.

The Link in 1st post no longer works. Is the free Maya 5 deal over?

A friend of mine jsut got Maya 7 full. It's the same, except it has water effects, no watermark on the rendered pictures, and some other things.

Just for some info Maya is just as easy to learn than 3D max, and Maya is capable of doing every thing from web animation to games and film.

If your are goingt o learn 3d I would go with maya you have more flexability than any other 3d app out there, and not to say that other ones are anyless they are good. They are only as good as the person using them is.
