The core is soldered onto the IHS and trying to remove will destroy the cpu when it separates the layers. There is also small resistor packs around the core that would get broken on razor insert.

Havn't that been the case with Intel cpu's for a long time? It's certainly possible to remove the IHS even though it's soldered, just a bit more risky

Looks like a TIM change, its a gold square.

Maybe a blow torch will do the trick, the resistors are completely around the core.

What about just sanding the heck out of it for 4-6 hours like this Q6600 pictured below.. you could probably get by with this!

i cant recall who removed the first IHSs off of intel chips here but it involved sliding 4 razors in each corner to create some pressure to separate the IHS and PCB and just add heat source on top to heat up the core and it should just pop off

Pictures please. And I agree--the sanding-for-6-hours method should allow this to be successful.

Why spend that much time sanding.. just use a mill and nick off a small quantity where you know there isn't a core and then measure the thickness of the IHS. Then use the mill and mill out nearly all the IHS and then sand off the remaining

crazyxp did it first. use nevrdull to get the indium off. I'm pretty sure you can remove nehalem ihs no problem, like the q6600. The q6600 had smds too, and people did it. Just have to more careful.
