24-70 mark II is coming soon so you should wait a bit but 24-70 is one of the best zoom lens you can get. If you want the best, then you have to be rich and buy primes

Here is a picture i have done in the studio:

Intel i7 2600k, Asus p8p67 EVO, Thermalright Archon, G.Skill RipjawsX 8GB, Asus EAH6970 DCII, Corsair AX850W, Asus xonar essence ST, Coolermaster HAF 932,
    Crucial C300 128GB, WD Caviar Black 1 TB, Samsung F3 1TB.

yeah i saw the rumors of the 24-70 II
given history for canon the II model will be more than the 24-70 I
used 24-70 f/2.8L go for around $1100. new they are about $1500.00

versatility goes to the 24-70 but image quality goes to the 135mm F/2 hands down.

Thoughts.. yup, dont buy it. Get good prime instead. Or maybe 24-105mm f/4 IS. I think that instead of using fast zoom stoped down, maybe slower zoom with IS could be bit more usefull. Except that chromatic aberation at widest angle.

Since you peeked into Zeiss territory, things like 35mm f/2 could be pretty interesting for you. As long as you dont mind focusing manualy. And.. since you own Canon, theres possibility to use every Nikon lens on that. Today even G lens, as there are adapters with aperture control for Nikon G lens.

But, 24-70 has its benefits, it has AF, f2.8 is usable at certain range. Though, if it was me.. it would be Zeiss 35mm f/2 or something even more exotic. (my dream is 17mm f/4 TS-E)

In all seriousness, Lestat, just get a versatile zoom that can cover the ultra wide to 70mm or so range. In the end it's how you use the lenses, not what lenses you have. I make do with a 18-55mm IS for wide angle, 50mm F/1.8 for mostly everything, and a 55-250mm for my zoom needs. And frankly, I have not been in a situation where I could not get a shot that I wanted to. Sure, my shots could have been sharper, crisper or what have you - but not enough to make or break the image.

i tried the 24-70 at my local shop today and wasnt impressed. ALTHOUGH, it has its own style of capture, the images look different than other lenses sometimes. its just the way the lens does things.

i have seem some seriously great shots on photography-on-the.net
this copy wasnt what i was looking for but in all fairness, snapping a couple of shots in a store really doesnt tell us anything does it?

but i look at $1400.00 ... this thing better scream awesome shots.
but again candid shots, not setting anything up. with only some minor unsharp mask done with photoshop... well. ... ....

here are a few that i took
I thought i had more that were around F/5.6 and f/8.0 but i must not have.

    F/2.8 ISO100 @ 70mm

    F/2.8 ISO100 @ 48mm

    F/2.8 ISO100 @ 70mm

    F/2.8 ISO100 @ 24mm

    F/8 ISO100 @ 24mm

Just got myself a Canon 50mm f1.4 to replace my rather lacking Sigma 50mm. The difference is pretty damn huge. This lens completely triumphs the Sigma, it can properly do 1.4! Although you do need to watch out for fringing and CA at this aperture!
Also tried the f1.2 while I was testing the f1.4. These two lenses are seriously similar at f1.4 and out.
Braking the rules a bit by posting three pictures.

From what I've heard from others, the Sigma almost always beat the Canon. The Sigma is supposed to be compared most closely to the 50L than the 50 f/1.4 in terms of image quality.

Maybe yours has a common focusing problem.

Yes i know that some people have to go through more than 3 lenses before getting the sharp one. It is annoying to not be able to get same quality with every lens.

I have heard and read the same, but unfortunately it's not something as simple as a focusing issue. This is something I can adjust in my camera and test out. And so I have without any change in that department.

No, my lens had sharpness issues regardless of focus, I have done several stationary tests while using liveview to properly see this. A friend of mine has exactly the same issue as well, lens just plain unusable from 1.4 - f2.
I don't doubt a good version would be nice though, but I don't care to spend time and money on that jeopardy.
The 50L is visually over rated, telling it apart from the non L canon 50 at f1.4 is almost impossible.
