When you do HDR make sure you take the shots "properly".
What do I mean by properly.
You want the darkest exposure to be the... normal exposure ( check your histogram ), taking darker exposures only introduces more noise to the already noisy HDR process.
So, in practice, you need a normal exposure, and a few exposures ( depending on the situation, lighting conditions ) over-exposed.
Then you can "darken" the normal exposure to generate the dark frames for your HDR, or totally skip that part and do manual shadow deepening in post process of the completed HDR or tune the HDR software half-way through.

Thanks for the input BZ, its always appreciated

The shot was not originally HDR/bracketed, its a cropped handheld RAW, then used Photomatix Pro for the effects

I haven't played too much with bracketing exposures as yet but I understand the logic, I'll try a similar scene next time (if this 'kin rain/wind ever stops ) using 3 exposures and maybe use a tripod

Some extra info on my last image:

The bird's head is 3mm across. I have calculated the magnification ratio as 3.4:1 by photographing a ruler and fitting a maxumum of 7mm across the frame. The camera was attached to a tripod standing on the floor next to a table, and the lens was held freely in front of the camera.

Just got back from a hiking trip on the Na Pali coast of Kaua'i. Nearly died, didn't get to the end, but did get a few pics (only 1 from the trail due to aforementioned near death-ness)

Lovely shots of Na Pali & Waimea canyon Drakarian. Sorry you had troubles out there; what happened?

Kauai is where my wife & I had our honeymoon. It's my life's mission to make it back there some day. Such a beautiful place.

    Thanks all
Nothing much happened, it's just a very hard hike and I'm really out of shape Conditions didn't help with the 90% humidity and no wind, but it's mostly on me. It's epically beautiful though, I want to get back there and finish the hike some day.
Also if anyone plans to take a trip out for the hike; either take a cab to the trail or get insurance on your rental. Our rental had its' fuel line cut while we were out camping.

Here's some more fun with the macro tubes and off-camera flash. Thinking alike again there alpha. Great fly!

The setup (apologies for the phone pic...the stone is under the lens there).

    The photo:
    70D, EF-S 18-135 IS @ 135mm, f/20, 1/5 sec, ISO 1000, off-camera flash fired

    ...and 100% crop.
