    Been out of the loop...

Ok, so I had to travel alot with work lately and took up alot of other crap that had left me with no time to always have my nose into the forums and my favorite website and stores.... basically i haven't a clue whats out there lately

So I have some big poker winnings burning a hole in my pocket and want to upgrade the rig (even tho i have barely used it lately )

    So what i have currently is a qx9650 on a 790i with 4gb of ddr3 1600, 2x 9800gx2 ...

what would be the best route .. new cpu/mobo... graphics cards??

what would you do to yours?

Absolutely nothing? What exactly can't you do with that rig? Try investing your money in commodities or something...

I suppose if you had to go on a spending fix, you could buy a new Core i7, an X58, and a pair of 4870X2s. However, I doubt you'd see great results anywhere but the synthetic benchmarks.

I would put my winnings towards my poker bankroll.

For my part I know nothing with any certainty, but the sight of the stars makes me dream.

yeah im pretty sick wanting to upgrade that aren't i :P

I'm withdrawing some cash after a tourney score online cause I don't want to be tempted to play high stakes just yet... left my current roll before the tourney intact since I'm doing good moving up the limits the slow way learning as I go.

Felt nice to withdraw a chunk of cash though so I figured I spend it utterly frivolously on something I absolutely don't need :P

You have two 9800GX2s to play online poker? Man... PokerStar's graphics must be sick. How many polygons are in that ace of spades?

if your an overclocker this option wins..

personally, i'd drop the 9800GX2's, and pick up either an HD4870 1gig or GTX280.. lesser in performance but single chip GPU's have no microstuttering.

but, if I could spend the money on anything...

I'd invest.. Stimulating the economy one poker-game winning streak at a time.

Oh wow... so on the x58 chipset I can use Xfire OR SLI ...

I remember last time I was in the market this was just never gonna be likely.

The only thing you need to upgrade would probably be the GPUs.

CPU- (45nm 4Ghz) more than enough
Ram- 4 Gigs still good (I don't know what apps your run)
    HDDs- in RAID fast enough
GPUs- 9800gx2 is starting to show its age.

GTX 280 SLI, then you're back on track

I was starting to lean this way as well..

my 3rd option is starting to look like selling most of my current rig to my brother for cheap to upgrade him and revamp mine with mobo/cpu/gfx/ram...

then I win and he wins... he's still on the last one I made him which is starting to show it's age...

Has D tek come up with a mount for this new socket yet?

I'd kill the gambling habit first and foremost, you cant win, the odds are against you.

    Someone had to say it

    Good luck

It is possible to have an edge at poker.. not like it's slot machines I gamble on.

Grab an i7 920 and import a Biostar X58 or buy an EVGA X58. That's how to spend money fast. And add a second loop or upgrade your block to something like a FuZion v2 or something nice.

Edge against who? It's not like you're playing the dealer. You're correct and the person you're replying to is just be a bit prude, I think.

I agree, gambling habits are bad, especially gambling habits against the house. Even in Blackjack where you can easily have an edge, the casinos rely on man's lack of sensibility and the fact that they have a significantly larger bank roll than you to make sure they get your money in the end. People get on streaks, they raise their bets and before they know it, they're broke.

Now, poker on the other hand is a player vs player game... you walk in which statistical odds just as good as any other player until skill is factored in. If you're good, you're good... what else can you say? Good luck with the winnings. I personally wouldn't invest it in anything that's going to grant me a few FPS in a game or a few milliseconds in a sequential read, but it's your money.

But you lose more than you win, all gamblers do over time, that's why Casino's make money

But fair play, spend your winnings on a good comp before you plough it back in to poker.

    Good Luck.

If you think poker is pure gambling and involves no skill you aren't quite familiar with how it works.

Luck is only short term in poker, (speaking cash games here) you might get unlucky and lose a hand when you were the favorite to win, but if you made the correct mathematical decision in that spot, over time you'll even out and show a profit in that situation.

Scotland has always produced poor poker players.

If you absolutely must upgrade, I would consider a 4870 X2. I wouldn't blow the money on GTX 280 SLI, if you want to go NVIDIA, I would go GTX 260 Core 216 SLI. With a little overclocking, they can outperform GTX 280s.

Personally, I wouldn't upgrade now though.
