3D gaming steps a little closer

    Nvidia squinting ahead

3D GAMING NVIDIA style could be closer than you think, with the Taiwanese rumour mill claiming the Green Goblin has given EMS provider Flextronics the task of manufacturing its ‘soon to be released’ GeForce 3D stereo glasses.

According to whisperings from DodgyTimes’ secret sauces, the 3D specs have already passed design validation tests (DVT) and should be ready to ship before year’s end.

Daaaaaaaaaaamn!!!!! I just cannot wait!!! Then I can finally buy the GTX-290 whenever it comes out, since the G80 series are the last Nvidia cards to work with 3D shutter glasses (only by a slightly "hacked" method, actually...)

the glasses will be useless without a monitor that can run above or at 120Hz, so I wont be exited until i see an affordable true 120Hz monitor

Sighs... headaches are only for those who do not know how to make it run correctly. Ever heard of the convergence and separation settings? Those settings are very easy to change, and can be adjusted on-the-fly with hotkeys.

I can make it run perfectly fine with most games, and can play in 3-D for hours without getting any headaches.

Great! There are already many nice CRT's that can run at over 120 Hz. Mine can do 1440x900 @ 120Hz, or 1280x800 @ 140Hz. Cant wait for 1920x1200 LCD's that can do 120Hz!!!!!!

No news about the ViewSonic VX2265wm "120Hz" monitor yet? At least this monitor is capable of 3D gaming according to nvidia & viewsonic. Don't know why NVIDIA is so quick to speak about 3D gaming before we have capable monitors first (doubt this was targeted for all the CRT & freaky big DLP TV users, which market does exist almost only in the US). xD

i don't like 3d gaming, especially if you have to wear some clumsy glasses for it.

This is something that I been waiting for.

First, I would get at least a 24" 3d 120Hz Screen, then the glasses and two next-gen cards. Finally Disney @ Home hahaha

Hrmm, read the article. The INQ does discuss how the Nvidia Rep. refuted a few of DigiTimes' claims. However, I also noted one thing of interest...

"Thirdly, both Samsung and ViewSonic are set to unveil their 120 Hz LCD offerings very shortly indeed."

I'll do a search in a second but this is the first time I've heard about Samsung releasing a 120 Hz LCD... also AMD getting into Stereo 3D?

I think I remember some articles already some 1 - 1½ year ago Samsung was also looking into 120Hz LCD monitor tech where it said it might even become the standard in a while. I haven't heard anything since though. Doesn't look like there's going to be any ViewSonic VX2265wm available either before earliest Jan 2009 but I can always hope. At least they've appeared in different HW search engines for a while but of course no availability.

Personally I'm more interested in the capable monitors than the glasses but if this tech can bring a gear into 120Hz LCD market, of course appriciate this 3D gaming concept too.

From what I remember I believe you still need AA when you play games using Stereo 3D. From what I've seen, that can cripple your frame rates. Has that improved since I last took note of this?

Are you trying to say you want to play Crysis in 3D?

Im going for this more for videos/movies and some games, maybe CS or COD.

how about a display that doesnt require glasses for stereoscopy? I do believe those autostereoscopy displays have quite low refresh rate (or at least had), but still..
If I wanted to have something on my head I'd rather go for one of them headset things with a seperate lcd for each eye . Costs are a lot higher tho

Oh well, good for the people that have time to waste experimenting with such stuff .

1920*1200 at 120hz is getting close to the bandwidth limitation of dual-dvi.

Even my ancient crt does 120Hz at 1024x768 which, yes, is perfectly alright with some AA.

Well apart from lots of bandwidth at 1920x1200 @ 120Hz you need quite beefy graphic cards for new games if wanting to run at 120 or say even 100Hz/100 fps.

But yea it would still be nice to be able to play older games like UT2k4 online 1920x1200 @ 120 Hz/FPS.

When it's running in 3D it really doesn't matter so long as you run in native resolution (16x10).

    slim142: Crysis ran OK in 3D on a Triple-Sli GTX260 system but a single 9800 GTX+ wasn't up to it
RPGWiZaRD: Zombie Panic looks brilliant on it so I guess the sequel will too

Some people who tried it said it gave them a headache, I found this true at first but got used to it pretty quickly, motion sickness and readjusting to normal vision were more obvious side effects.

Some people cannot handle it. It depends on the person. People susceptible to motion sickness on planes or boats should probably avoid them.

I've been in VR sims numerous times before they pulled them from all of the amusement parks. Never had an issue. of course I love roller coasters, and can fly inverted, have done spins, rolls, hammerheads, and all kinds of manuevers.

Some people will throw up if you give them the feeling of anything more or less than 1G. Some people cannot even handle driving through Mountain roads without taking motion sickeness pills.

I also have a Track IR head tracking, and some people cannot handle those and get disoriented.

People susceptible to motion sickness or vertigo will have problems. people that have seizuers, or epilipsy should not use theswe devices becasue high frequency "flashing" can set them off.

It's like everything else. Certain people can handle it, while others cannot.
