    Crunchers Cost Benefit

See attached sheet. Need more data. You guys have a play around and copy tabs and enter yer own data.

I want to eventually map out where new gens high capital cost with improved points vs get beat out by old gens low cost/low points.

Anyway... even the sheet on its own is useful for people to quantively see what the cost of a given rig/setup will be over a given time period.

    Ya I was bored.

lol... ^^ Thats the crap I do Mon-Fri. I'm only getting used to Office 2007. Was a '03 mule for years. Buttons all over the place. Blah. I need more practice.

If someone can give me teh cost of Daves Nehalem machine, I'll exchnage rate it over, and gleam the info fomr the thread? His stuff ain;t available on local etailers yet. Anyone give me a shot at the cost of his machine on new egg or whatever?

I've paid virtually nothing for the five machines I run aside for the power to feed their ravenous little stomachs. Plus I'm still back in 65nm land and older so my data would be of limited usefulness anyway.

Well you then sir in your case the Capital cost = Zero, and then you just have the power cost of your hardware. So work it out and tell me teh PPD/$$$ value. For yourself if not for me.

It's interesting to see how much you allocated for power consumption. Good job on the sheet and it will be good if you want to get a rough idea of how much another quad is going to set you back.

Ya. Thanks. I measured a Q6700 at 3.2Ghz, 220W from teh wall... POS GFX ect. I think Dave then corraborated this later on his Q6600 @ 3.6Ghz or whatever. So Thats why I picked 220W. For a base machine thats fine.

Now in another case if you have a Dual core E8500 with a bunch of 280GTX's SLI etc on idle,.... then you have to use YOUR Power draw. COuld be closer to 400W, especially with a bunch of pumps and a million fans.

Ya... add in hair straighteners, hair dryers, machine washes and other crap they use. Fire it onto Excel sheets and throw it at them, figiures and all.

Have a conclusion that says Q6600 = 200x Hair dryer.

I (or anyone) can set up a spreadsheet on google docs and then post the userid and password here (or maybe pm so the bots don't get it).

I'm happy to do it if you tell me what fields it should have and what relationships you want programmed.

I don't know how fancy google's spreadsheets get, but the gf is an Excel wiz so I can always get her to help.

edit - that would eliminate the need for any one person to have to maintain the data and it would be a good place for other projects that have never gotten done because it was just too much work for one person.

Thanks, but probably not necessary. The only things I'm really lacking to push it forward, is Phenom/AMD info, powerusage, points/clock, and of course Nehalem.

Dave has already gave us plenty of Nehalem info... just I had not seen any prices on local etailers for his gear. Didn't look at US ones.

Office 07 just plain sucks. Simple as that. Looks like some "learning by playing" software for children. I won't leave 03 Pro unless I absolutely have to. And then prolly go for OpenOffice anyway

My only cost is buying hardware. I have free 'net and 'coolin and free 'powah through my university. Oh, and I refuse to use Office 07. I bought my copy of Office 03--I'll be happy to use the crack so I don't burn through activations.

No. It doesn't suck. Just takes a little getting used to.... positioning. Heavy users of Office apps, once gotten a little use of 07 wll tell you its great.

Well then they talk BS. Cause it's simply not great, and it looks even worse

Anyhow, back to topic. What power cost per KWH did you calculate with? I can't seem to find that info...

    Well, I got 18 Euro-cent per KWH.
Thing is, I hate math, so what you're doing there goes a bit beyond what I'm inclined to do for fun

Still, I'll try to come up with some usable data on the harpers for your table...

Bingo! Thats what I want. Now you can use the sheet yourself as well as show your figures here for me to use. Its ontly a very simple sheet, with one vlookup.

    Well, here you go:

Dual Quad 45nm - 4060 Mhz clockspeed - Capital cost ~2000€ - average 42-43k PPD - power drain 350W (50W for the raid 5 + controller, no real GFX tho) - power cost 0,18 cent per KWH

    Need anything more?

OK. My PPD/Clock factor has gone out of synch. My assumptions were based on 65nm Quad 3.6Ghz = 15,000 per day. 45nm? = +10%. Dual quad on this reckoning WOULD have been... ((15,000)*2*4.06/3.6)*1.1 = 37216. So you are getting 42500 average? hmmm.. 64bit OS? Linux?

OK I ammended for Your harpers alone...

And what ya know... the Harpers are a little more efficient than a Q6600 considereing the very large Capital investment.

I kept the power/unit cost same as mine so that a fair analysis can be made between the two. In another country with diff power costs the argumant might swing back towards the Q6600 as efficiency measure.

On Win XP x64, yes. They are claiming way over 50k but get cut down by the Quota.
Initial cost is so high because of the X5450's and the 2TB storage subsystem as well as the full WC equipment, my E5420 rig does/did 34K PPD average at around 1200€ Capital cost. They also drew 50W less.

Edit: I just re-calculated the last 14-day average and it's only 41500 ppd average, sorry for the mixup.
