I haven't used mirc in years but maybe you need the full server name? "/server irc.quaknet.org" works for me on my client.

Yeah I can't stand mirc either. For just daily chatting I use xchat which is much nicer on the eyes and quite simple to use (I use the non-free build but I think the free one pretty much identical).

Oh, oh, me! me! Pick me!

    Ok, so go here: http://www.mirc.com/get.html
Dl the client and just install through it
Click yes, default settings are fine...
Then click connect and put in #xs.wcg for the channel.

I just got this set up.

There are plenty of free mIRC clients. I'm using Pidgin. It covers MSN, ICQ, Yahoo, IRC and a bunch of others.

mIRC client... mIRC is just client software not the protocol

I'm using nbs-irc mod with mIRC. True mirc is shareware, but it can be used for free without cracking or reinstalling it monthly.
If you're a linux guy and don't mind CLI irssi is a darn good client. When ran on top of screen you can use same irssi session anywhere you can connect to your linux box via SSH
