I use mIRC and have it set to connect through a script command.. actually several given that it connects to 7+ networks at once.

I tried mIRC but I didn't want to pay for it so i'm using ChatZilla for Firefox. It works pretty well so far and doesn't require Firefox to be open which is nice. It's also free.

mIRC is also free, just put up with the nag screen.
