You may have seen it - Freezer + Dead D9 ram = ~50% revival

    http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/...54#post3392354

Some of you guys have seen this thread already.. but many might have not.
I know a lot of you farm guys can burn through ram and might have built up a collection of dead/half dead ram.

Well i tried it out , and I had some success. One set of previously dead sticks back up working.

Bascially stick dead ram in freezer for a day and then test them out. You might be lucky.

But the question is how long does the dead RAM stay alive for? There isn't really much point if the RAM is just going to die again in a day or two Not like an HDD where you can use that extra time to get some of the data off it.

Would be interesting to get a "dead" stick and do some LN2 dipping and see if it takes a certain amount of cycles to achieve the results or just a single freeze. Have a feeling LN2 would be bad though.. I use LN2 to remove heatspreaders so you'd most likely lose your heatspreaders

Thats a fair point. I'll be the first to report it dead if it happens.

    Its a regular freezer. Not a deep freezer. About -10C , -15C I reckon.

I did it with some old crucial ballistix 667mhz ram and now they have been working since the day after that thread was started running at 1100mhz 24/7

it's amazing that this trick actually works, but i really don't get how this works. memory has no moving parts, so how does temperature magically fix it?

I skimmed the thread. I know RyderOCZ responded to me about some ram... but I'm not sure if anyone from the industry said anything technical.... or would be allowed to.

But does have tracers that are in the silicone so if you freeze them they shrink.
Cold = Shrink, Heat = Expand as you know. So if there was a little seperation in the chip it might have come together enough to revive the D9's and get it going again.
Just my But I think that is why. Anyone to say not

I do this with hard drives. I've lost a few HDD's that had data on them that I needed. They died bad enough that the computer wouldn't boot with them hooked up. Throw them in the freezer for the night and bam, back working the next day. Tho they didn't last long, I got my data off them.

Major thread revival, but are they still alive? Mine were going strong until a few months ago but I've since framed them as I no longer have a ddr2 board and 600mhz 3-3-3 was a once in a lifetime experience. I would imagine they're still fine but can someone confirm with their experiences? And I'm glad to see my fix made it to a worthy section
