media center in vista ultimate 64

maybe someone can help me. i just built a htpc for my dad and put all the vids/pics/music on it. when i open media center music and pics play fine, but none of the movies work, only hear audio. they all work in vlc and i tried the ffdshadow or w/e codec pack and it still didnt play all the movies.

does anyone know how to integrate vlc into media center or of a codec pack that will play all the movies, and that would be easy for my dad to d/l and install

    thanks

pretty sure you have to install them manually. I don't know of any packages that make it easy.

I use CCCP on my media PCs, and haven't had to install anything else.

Also try using core avc codec its superb and will allow 1080p playback on most systems.

    http://www.coreavc.com/

Thats what I use, occasionally though I will have to use VLC for some formats but hey ho its no biggy.

The other option is to try media portal which is a free replacement to media center and can be customized alot more and you can specify the codecs that you would like to use for each format.
