    Commando... again

Just for fun cause none of the 2 of my recent boards (Biostar P45, DFI P45) that I tried was able to deal with this E8600.

I've got hard times trying to clock it with the DFI JR and the Biostar TPower; but both gave weird results (5.5GHz+ on DFI; 5.9GHz+ on Biostar both with tons of different settings). First of all, I've used Grosse Bertha 3-Stager and LN², but that was too cold... then with Petite Bertha 2-Stager which was too cold as well.

I started losing my temper; thinking that maybe the CPU was rubbish.

Well, finally I took an old commando of mine, and quickly tried the CPU on air... It booted up at 5.1GHz (600x8.5) @1.45v (BIOS) radbox cooled. And it easily reached the actual FSB air limit of the board (610).

Consequently, I've decided to use a 'smaller' cascade (CPU IHS at -98C to -90C so far; lets say about -110C to -102C evap).

    Code:
    M/B:Asus Commando, Vdroop mod
    CPU:Intel Core Extreme E8600 Q822A
    CPU cooling:2 Stage Cascade
    Memory:Crucial Ballistix PC2-6400 1024MBx2
    VGA:Asus HD3870
    HDD:Western Digital 80GB
    Power Supply:Cooler-Master 1250W
    Vcore:1.85V(BIOS)
    Vdimm: AUTO
    Vmch: AUTO
    Vfsb: AUTO
    OS:Windows 2003 Server

This commando won't give better results I guess... waiting for boblemagnifique, and some more stuff to bench during the week end.

We will hopefully be able to get some nice marks out of this little piece of silicone.

Nice job Xav. You must be doing something right if two out of 3 of your cascades are too cold.

Thanks buddy Let me know when you come here.

The commando isn't too bad for 1M. I'm gonna try with 2x512MB which shown to be more appropriate on actual board.

    Xavier

Thx; as I said, 2 of my cascades were too cold, and so was LN². Of course, it is possible to focus on LN² but it would be a waste of it; I mean benching at about -100C is more appropriate for a cascade. Additionally, actual board won't pass ~625FSB for suicide screens no matter the CPU cooling.

Thanks PcCI2iminal-san I'm gonna try with another commando which I'm sure can achieve higher FSB clocks.

Freezing the northbridge should help with that. The thing limiting you is (I believe) a memory limitation. Regardless of dividers and voltages I CANNOT get above 606MHz dual channel. Try single channel, in my experience it opens up a lot of headroom and I've actually had single channel beat dual channel at the same speed and timings in Pi. Let me know

Thx. Yeah, for Spi1M, the commando is still leading.

Thx mate. Right, nevertheless there are nice to put some fans over the board.

Well, cooling the NB might help a bit; but not too much. Actually, with actual board 2x512MB is the only way to grab stability within the 600FSB+ range. 611FSB has been the max for 32M computations, while ~619FSB is the high-end for 1Ms.

The only way that I found to get few FSBs more is to sacrifice tRFC. I tried to run only one DRAM module but it didn't help.

About voltages, apart from vCORE and vDDR, it looks better to let the BIOS choose.

Like I said, try one stick of RAM I can hit 640MHz with single channel.

It might depend on both the DRAM and the board. We tried with a second commando of mine, but it didn't help at all.
