Performance RAM may damage you Nehalem

News article at The Enquirer LINKIE HERE

    Paul Taylor writes:
"WE GOT WORD that Intel is adivising mobo-makers and memory vendors alike about their new X58+Core i7 combo and to abide to a strict 1.65V limit on memory voltages, beyond which there is the risk of burning out the CPU. "

More at the site, of course.

Is this going to be a serious blow to overclocking?

I have 2 kits of ddr3 performance ram. 2x1gb ddr3-1600 OCZ Flex XLC and 2x2gb ddr3-1600 G.Skill HZ. Either kit will post and run fine with 1.5v. I think performance ram damaging anything is a non-issue. Tighter timings at lower mhz is fine with me if those are indeed going to be the circumstances. In fact it'll be nice being able to run less expensive kits and keep the high end stuff for my yorkies. However it remains to be seen if this is going to effect cpu overclocks. Everything I read from DrWho seems to indicate it will not.

Francois Piednoel aka DrWho? He's the lead for nehalem. Posts in the news section frequently. Not sure what Galifreyan news service is but I'm quite sure I don't have it.

Dr.Who? on the forum or Francois Piednoel, the Intel team manager for the SkullTrail systen and now on Nehalem.
Nice guy, smarter than hell and tells what he's "allowed" to.
Interesting posts by him although I will admit some are over my head.

I'm as dumb as a box of rocks about most of the technical details of cpu architecture and most of the discussions I read were highly technical but the Dr has a way of making a lot of it understandable to commoners while still being pertinent. Very refreshing for an engineer at his level of expertise.

John, I read.. Think on that..
To keep up with you guys I have to and beleive it or not I pretty much understand all the changes in Nehalem vs the yorkies.
I do have more to learn but not as uneducated on this as you might think..

I've been reading about this last night .

That sticker on the cpu socket looks serious business.
Intel wouldn't put it there for no reason , imo.

    here's the link

No more than 1.65v Vdimm for me .

So now we just need good clocking low voltage DDR3 sticks.

I think it's just part and parcel of having an IMC. I know a few guys who've burnt out Phenom X4's because they used too much vDIMM, so it honestly doesn't surprise me that there are limitations with Nehalem. I'm personally not much of a memory overclocker, so I'll be happy with some 1333 sticks that have nice timings and low voltage.

What I want to know is how much of a safety margin that 1.65v is. I bet you won't be frying your CPU until you reach 1.75-1.8v...
    Main rig:
    CPU: I7 920C0 @ 3.6Ghz (180*20)
    Mobo: DFI UT X58 T3eH8
    RAM: 12GB OCZ DDR3-1600 Platinum
    GPU/LCD: GeForce GTX280 + GeForce 8600GTS (Quad LCDs)
    Intel X25-M G2 80GB, 12TB storage
    PSU/Case: Corsair AX850, Silverstone TJ07

Lets see what the performance is before it overclocks before we get nervous.
After all, a factory stock Enzo is pretty impressive is it not?

The lead of Nehalem are Glenn and Ronak ... I am actually the guy that make sure they deliver the performance they promissed over the last 5 years.
You know ... "are we there yet? are we there yet? are we there yet?"
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=raNM0UvR_Bo (that's my job )

It is a team work, body can actually claim being the lead except a guy that you almost never hear about ... the General manager ... Intel expose the technolgy leaders, but rarely expose the Master planner behind it. I am lucky enough to interract with one of those master planner almost every day, and I am learning every day. thousands of smart peoples with strong opinion ... imaging you got to manage this!
