    9800GTX+ Volt Mods

Anyone volt mod one of these babies? Its has the same layout as the 65nm card so it should be the same volt mod.

Also, can someone point out the hotspots on this card (besides the ussual Volt regs and mem)?

    Thanks!

    i used the 98gtx/gts 512 mod
    1.38v
it was easy to cool down, even using stock h/s without the cool temps shown in ss.
did not bother with the ram mod

it went 900 easy but not massive air clocks like the gts512 by my findings so far.

Nice results. I couldnt get above 850 on my old GTS (G92)'s (now fried, may they rest in peace). I think it might have been a PS issue (im not sure 750watts is pulling the weight it used to).

Ill be watercooling mine. I found some hot spots that needed cooling on my GTS's (that were not originally cooled). Placing a ram sync here and there helped keep temps down though didnt see any changes in overclocks.

So you just use the 8800GTS/GTX voltmod for this 9800gtx+?

No. Use the 9800GTX Voltmod for the 9800+. Once I have time, Ill be voltmoding two of these babies (watercooled). Probably looking for only ~900 core.

I know its been a while since starting this thread. Here are my results:
I found this card very responcive to the volts and very easy to overclock. However, I believe I reached the limit until I apply the overvolt mod. I can see this baby shooting well past 1000 core with more voltage. I have not taken a volt reading while under load, however while idle, the volts are set at 1.35.

    Tried unlinking the shaders?
There's likely much to be gained there...
    2300-2500MHz shader shouldn't be a problem.

I got the voltage to 1.5V and was able to get a minor increase on core to 915. Shaders shot up to 2300 but Crysis ran slower with them unlinked from the core, so keeping them linked for now.

Man my old 9800GTX 65nm ran 860core 2200shader and 2400mem on stock vc. That was one impressive overclocking card.

Yeah, I overvolted my old 8800GTS 512s (used to get ~800 stock) and was only able to get 850 max . Im slowly working these cards up, but like I said, Im still unsure how well this 55nm chip is designed. It certainly doesnt have the nice transitors we find in Intel chips so volt leakage is my main concern.

The other day I also did something to my cards to make the screen turn into a bunch of red and black lines. I had to uplug the comp, remove the power cables, restart, turn off again, and replace the cables to make work again (as per instructions from a neighbor). Scared the hell out of me and I havent been messing with the volts since.

Dude your Q6600 with 3 working cores is cracking me up You should list it on ebay as the worlds only tri core Q6600, it would probably sell for about $1000.00 knowing some of the buyers on ebay.

$1000??!! You want to pay $1000?? Ill pay shipping...

I actually like it A LOT! It has the overclocking head room of a dual core and the multitasking of a quad (sort of... ).

LOL, no thanks. I like my current Q6600 with all 4 cores just fine.

I guess that makes sense because it would run a bit cooler.

Just a quick update, jumped volts up to 1.55V with no noticeable overclock increase. Tried 1.6V and nothing. It looks like ~910core @ 1.5V is about the highest this overclock will go (im actually thinking the max is closer to 1.45 as the jump form 1.4 to 1.5V gave 896 to 915 respectively. Will look into tweaking this a bit more when I have time). Was able to get the shaders up to 2300 at these volts but not 24/7 (only benching). Didnt worry about the max stable shader as Crysis showed a decrease in performance with the Core and shader unlinked. No other game I play even needs a overclock, much less something this fast so Im not worried about maxing out the shaders.

    Other thoughts:
Crysis actually only really sees any diff at Very High settings. Using the Natural Mod and Pydn's Shadder Tweak with Very High config file and running Crysis at DX9 I get ~40-70FPS and even up to 100FPS in less graphic intense scenes with or without an overclock @1680x1050 (there is a diff in max frame rates, but min is about the same). It seems that Crysis is actually bottlenecked by my memory which makes sense as my cards only have 512MB of dedicated mem.

My tri core Q6600 is running strong at 3600.

Thanks for the results , I was interested in doing this also but I had hoped they would clock higher. The last card I modded was an 8800gts512 and it was a ripper , it could bench 930 mhz core easily on water (1.45v iirc) and did 900 at 1.35 . I sold it and moved on but it was a good one .

930? I was only able to get 860 on my 8800GTS's. I think Im limited by the overvolt protection on these cards. Anything over 1.5V crashes, regardless the speed (???). Im currently running 910 Core and 2300 shader 24/7 @ 1.5V (idle; 1.55 load).

Need a bit of help and didnt want to start a new thread.

Currently running at 1.5V idle (~1.7V load I think). I get 910 core and 2300 shader very easily but anything above that is a no go. Temps are great so I was wondering if there was a OVP mod I needed for more volts (anything over 1.5V yeilds nothing and eventually causes crashes/no post). How much extra would re-capping my cards yeild and how much $$$ for the caps? Also, I know the volts are bit high (dont plan on keeping these cards too long though) but what would be the absolute cut off on the volts?

Any advice for more speed (great temps on memory, GPU, and v-regs)?

OVP would cause an instant crash once the threshold voltage is exceeded, so it doesn't look like OVP.
My 2 cents are; G92 has always seemed to have a freq wall soon after 900MHz. It likely there's nothing you can do about it.

Yes that is what Im hearing. Ive seen it over 1000, but it was on some sort of exotic cooling. I might look into overvolting the memory but dont see much gain there either. Looks like I might have to purchase new cards soon. Oh well, time to have fun with these .

Tried the mod yesterday.. didnt have a VR, so i tested with regular resistors. stock reading 1.205V, 470ohm = 1.240, 110ohm, 1.350V.. at 1.35V the PSU cuts the power.. crappy PSU or ovp ??

I had mass artifacting over 1.31v. The PWM Vs boot clockspeeds are miles off being useful.

You might have OVP based on VID.

What card and PCB version are you using? I have the XFX ones and Id recommend them to no-one for overclocking.
