3rd party programs can. Shuts down metro and replaces it with something else.

I haven't heard about that, but there is a "desktop" in there you can use ... though it's been nerf'd.

    Vista SP3 = Win 7

Vista wasn't that bad imo , it just got bad press from the beginning.
Maybe a few quirks which were fixed in SP1

Are you sure you want to do that? I can't let you do that, Dave.

Oh ... I managed to reference Sossaman gear in a uni thing I wrote today. Nothing worth posting, just a lead-in to talking about HP's nearly released Project Moonshot high efficiency server systems.

Overall I agree, but I've had several Vista machines after a few years just randomly start loving to disk thrash for no apparent reason and slow way down. Just sits there grinding away doing absolutely nothing. Windows search and Superfetch both turned off and it still sits there grinding. I've never had a Win7 box do that yet.

You went with windows 8 for the NAS O/S?
Just curious why you chose that over something like FreeNAS?
Sorry for hi-jacking (It seems I'm pretty good at it). I'm in the very early stages of researching/planning a NAS machine.

well.. this is quite the thread.. not sure if there is anything like it anywhere else: hardware c.2006 (iirc), thread made in 2008 & still going in 2014!

my sossaman is still going strong, what about you folk who used sossaman as crunchers?

my sossaman recently changed role (again) - no longer HTPC... it is now my pfsense box!

Mine has been off since March due to job changes, moving, etc but I think I'll probably have it running again in a couple weeks.

I've got mine crunching for the challenge. After that I'm looking at using them as part of a small rendering farm. The 32bit restriction is a complication, but not insurmountable.

well I posted not a while back for a single 2Ghz CPU as I have one all by itself.. MM didn't get back to me.. if MM or anyone else has a single 2Ghz CPU to give you, I'll give you mine + some RAM.. you'll need to find the rest to make a complete rig!
