It OCs to 875 on stock. Happy?
I think you are mistaken.
GDDR-5 Microcircuits can be produced with the use of four-layer design, whereas GDDR-3 required six-layer design. Of course this reduces the prime cost . In the energy consumption plan GDDR-5 win over GDDR-3 by about 30%. To autumn Qimonda engineers will reduce the working GDDR-5 voltage from 1.2 to 1.0 v which also favorably will affect the energy efficiency . The density of GDDR-5 microcircuits will also allow to create video cards with large memory capacity. Qimonda actively increases the GDDR5 memory production volumes . . ........

for every generation they try to lower the power/energy consumption.
In progress......
ATI should just hurry their game and make a laptop version of the RV730.
An RV730 + 512MB GDDR5 lappie would be sweet
Some of you guys should do a little research before you go on about power consumption figures: link
It actually draws less than a 3650 under load, which is around 40w, and 35w less than 3850, which is around 60-70w 3850 power draw@xbitlabs
And as already mentioned, GGDR5 draws about 30% less power than GDDR3.
All in all it seems like a damn efficient chip! A laptop version with GDDR5 could prove to be very good as well, as soon as they can ramp up GGDR5 production.
Obsolescence be thy name
Shouldnt be to hard to solder on a external powersupply connector... no? For thoose who wants some cheap OC fun.

This is an awsome card. Some people aren't seeing the advancement here. You start from the big and energy hungry fiasco named 2900XT. It was 512 bit and needed two 6-pin conectors. Then came the 38x0 wich were very decent 256 bit video cards, that needed one 6-pin power conector, and had the same performance than 2900XT. Now an 128 bit card, that don't need any power conector, is close to 3850 speed, at the same 55nm process! And an GDDR5 version will probably drive it to 2900XT's performance level or above! With 3~4 times less energy consumption, 3~4 times lower price and 4 times smaller buss. All this in less than an year and a half. Admitedly, the starting point was very low, but nonetheless.
I'm with Calmatory. The 4650 should have overclock headroom, and will be cheaper. Aside from crisis, where it's performance is strangely absmall (probably an early driver bug), it seems an good get for an casual 19" low budget gammer like me.
any news on the supposed HD 4750 with 480SP's and 192-bit interface...

Heat
small die example 3470 which has gddr3 instead of ddr2(3450), 64 bit interface. (also the lowest card with crossfire connectors.)
I have two they are very over clock able. (HA06 780G 9550 phenom in crossfire wtih 3470's)
Rivatuner can take them up to 1,000mhz core & memory 10-15C more heat but they're passively cooled.
this makes me wonder how a 2900 xt would've preformed with gddr5 lol
as it says on techpowerup
gddr5 on 256 bit is = to gddr3 on 512 bit
gddr5 on 128 bit is = to gddr3 on 256 bit
gddr5 on 64 bit would be = to gddr3 on 128 bit.
and so on half is needed when gddr5 is used.
