    Cool Core i7, GTX and D-Tek v2

Does anyone know if there will be an i7 adapter plate for the Apogee GTX and D-Tek v2?

I think it's too early to know or care at this point. There will definitely be solutions when that time comes.

i think that the dtek would just need a mounting plate, u dont have to cover the whole chip just the die

so it would be a fairly easyt hing to make so i couldent see it not being out with the chips

    Cool

Is it too early? What time frame for the i7 chips are you hearing or have you heard? My understanding is a couple more months, November or December at the latest no?

Freaky Freezer, yes it seems that they should be available this year (so December at the latest), though wide availability might not be before 09, but I don't think the nda is up so the exact specs on the socket (and mounting holes) may not be available so brackets/plates cant be talked about until that is up (though pictures of i7 motherboards started showing up last week (gigabyte, msi, asus, intel, foxcon) so it might be pretty soon). (Note I do not have any special information on i7, just what I have seen/read on the web). I think there are some people who frequent this forum who are under NDA, but obviously they can't say anything until the nda is up.

Given the larger die size, many have agreed that the i7 will need a new set of coolers. At least to be sure the entire die area is covered by cooling pins/fins and so forth. As evidence of this, note how behavior of even the current generation (various) behaves differently based on orientation and whether a quad or dual is being covered. So I'd expect that at minimum slightly larger cooler blocks will behave much better than the current variations.

Now being an inventive group in XS, if looking to save $$, one might very well "make do" with some kind of adapter or newer mounting system. But I believe there will be some performance penalty for doing so. Remember also that the i7 isn't 2 silicon chips as in current quad cores, but a single silicon so it's location "might" be fine in the center of the die in current generation blocks. I could very well be incorrect in assuming new blocks will be needed. But given current variations in orientation on current cores, I tend to think slightly new block designs will be needed.

$#@!$#@! if the mobo company would allow me to leak the dimensions, Iandh would have plates for the EK Supreme already. I tried telling them CUSTOM and only 1 will be made until launch, but there being very anal. :T

    Cant blame them tho.

but yeah wait til the NDA comes off the board. I dont want to mess this NDA up seeing how its the first real one i got.

Actually, the die size is not that big, and it is a SINGLE die which occupies less area that the sum of the current quad core CPU's. I predict center inlet blocks doing best again with Nehalem.

scott the cpu will seriously freak you out.

Its not as big as the slot P2's, but its noticibly big.

Yes I know he size is large, but the size of the actual die is not that large. I think it is so large due to the massive amount of pins no?

I'm sure the limitation comes from Intel itself, the mobo company is just making sure they don't get cut off from future chips too

    Cool

I would have thought that the GTZ at the very least would've planned ahead for the i7 being that the release date of the GTZ is so close to the upcoming release of the i7 and only an adapter plate would be needed. The D-Tek v2 release date was also fairly close to the i7 release, can't imagine these 2 companies coming out with an all new block just for the i7. It would probably cost them more money then they would make, in the beginning anyway.

I'm asking only cause I have a D-Tek v2 sitting around which I was going to use for an upcoming Q6600 build but I'm slowly deciding to save my money and wait a few months and build an i7 system instead. Why I always buy so many water-cooling parts in advance when I don't even have a system to put them in, I'll never know.

I would put money on Swiftech releasing an adapter plate that would allow you to use the GTZ on the i7 platform.

Seriously, since we know that Intel, and the mobo makers all take a peek in here, is there any point, now, to not getting the major waterblock makers the data they need to build and have ready good coolers for the release? I mean the high end is what's getting released first, so wouldn't water cooling be something to fit that market?

I'm sure I'm just not seeing things right, but I don't understand the logic of hiding dimensions and core locations at this point.

    Cool

Neither do I, it's not like AMD is waiting to steal any info at this point. Lets get this show on the road, I want to order more water-cooling parts in advance so I can wait too long to build the system and the parts become obsolete and I have to wonder if by any chance they will somehow fit the next generation of CPU's.

also its extreme edition only, and IMO useless without liquid or phase

i know that the dtek u could make your own, and the mounting looks similar to the am2 so u could mod a V1 mounting in all likely hood

also there are overhead picks so u could take a known size (pci-e slot) and make a key for finding the spacing of the mounting holes
