If you can't afford the lcd screen, you probably couldnt afford a video card that runs games at those reslutions anyways. Save your money for real technology. CRT died a long time ago for the home user.

I had one of those 21" Sony Trinitron CRT monitors once, it was OK but like many quickly developed a fault in that it got far too bright very quickly, it gets impossible to even compensate for this after time, there is a step by step mod on the net that shows you how to solder on a cheap resistor to the monitor PCB that stops the screen being too bright (do a Google for it) I did this and it worked.

However, this thing is gigantic in depth, the bezels are very wide after being used to LCD's but the response time in shooter games was very good and it served me well until I could afford a good 24" LCD. In the end I could not sell it though and actually gave it away to a friend.

I'd say if its a stop gap solution, then go for it, if its a refurb by a reputable company, then it should have some small warranty on it, bear in mind these things are quite old and maybe more prone to failure. They also take a bit of time to warm up compared to LCD's.

PS: 1600x1200 @100Hz was what I used as well.

If u can run the game @ 2048x1536 I would - I used to play FarCry @ that res - its soooo gorgeous.. u obviously wouldnt be able to play something like crysis @ that res tho

if ur CRT is running fine, stick with it - CRTs FTW!

That's just the maximum supported resolution - it likely wouldn't look pretty if you tried to use it for long. Most CRT's have trouble focusing the beam up that high.

Personally, I have two Sony built flatscreen Dell monitors, a P1110 and a P991. Got the 1110 for free because it had the too high G2 voltage issue causing too bright picture. The right way to fix it is to use Sony's DAS software to reprogram the EEPROM. Which is only legally available to authorized service centers. Easy fix is the resistor trick, and it works just as well without the fuss of making the interface cable. I just did the resistor mod.

But I want to go LCD on both rigs because the CRT's are too big and heavy, and heat up the room too much. That, and the P991 is starting to suck at convergence which makes my eyes hurt.

I personally still prefer CRT quality over LCD. Though I admit I haven't seen a high quality LED LCD model in person yet. I still have my NEC CRT sitting under my desk. With wicked high resolutions and superb refresh rates, LCD's are still behind in comparison. The only thing that made me decommission my CRT was buying a 40'' LCD. The fine granularity and smoothness of motion on CRT's is a true thing of beauty.
