Various pictures taken with various cameras:

This one taken with an old Olympus P&S:

This one taken with the same camera at the Nürbugring:

This one taken with a more recent Canon S5 IS, and I guess this is one of my favorite pictures, of the ones I've taken myself:

This last one was taken with a Canon 40D with a 17-55 F/2.8 IS lens. Haven't had any chance to go anywhere with this camera yet, so the backyard will have to do:

Done with a ~6.5 years old cam from Sony which offers almost no manual settings...

Yes, it took A LOT of time The second picture with the single drop was only pure luck since I wanted a splash photo.

Here's a quick and dirty Photochop of a pic that would have been awsome had I been allowed to move the car to a better "background"

Here's a high res 1680x1050 if someone wants to use it as a background.

I haven't taken many, but I want to participate, so here's me this morning trying out manual mode on my SX110 IS for the first time (well, not the FIRST time, but the first time after I tried to learn what the settings mean):

    ISO80, 10x zoom, F3.5 (or 4.8) I think, on a tripod
    resized in Paint (I know)

Was trying to get the 'blurry background' look while getting really close to something. The flowers are under 1" tall.

EDIT and two of my kitten
Both an 'Auto' I think... they just turned out pretty good and are funny. She tries to see through the window which is covered in foil, and I like how the reflection of her eyes turned out in it.
I think I had the flash on for both, I try to avoid using it, but the ones without flash were either dark or noisy.

Like I said I've only had the camera for a couple days now and it's my first... so I'd really like constructive criticism, but please don't be too hard... it's still a point-and-shoot, too.

Andrew, first pic is great imo, second pic is "distracting" what i mean by that is it isn't really clear on what you were trying to shoot and to much is "going on" in the pic.

The cat shots are decent, the bottom ones I would have shot in P mode and centered the focus on the cats ear top, and the cats eye bottom.

I use a P@S strictly, if you get the right camera you can do alot. I have a A720is, out of the box it's a great macro P&S with the 58mm lens kit and converters it does everything awsome.

    Okay.

I was just sort of playing around with the second one, seeing how unfocused foreground AND background might look.

The focus on the cat I tried playing with, but she was moving a lot, so those are two good ones out of like 50.

Thats why i recomended P mode, P mode is a great way to learn the functions of the camera and get great shots before you go full manual. It's also great for moving subjects. I shoot almost all my saltwater tank shots in P mode like this shot for instance. This fish is moving and the shot would have been perfect had I not blown away the sand. Note that I focused on the eye.

itznfb focused on the eye perfectly also in the pic above this post.

When you say 'focus' do you mean focus or center? I'm saying I did focus on the cat's eye, or tried to, before I/she moved.

When i say focus i mean center it. In P mode it focus's on dead center.

Right, but so does Auto, right? What I did is set the autofocus on the cat's face, then moved the frame to capture her. It all happened very fast, but now I know what you mean, to put the eye in the center.

Try a couple shots in auto and then try in P mode and play with ISO, I think you will be much happier with results. You will find in P mode that you can actually "stop" or capture a moving subject.

Not the clearest picture i've ever taken... But i call it my best because capturing the subject at exacty the right time to yield this picture wasn't easy.

This was just one of my favorite pictures from When I went to the Red Rocks in St. George Utah. It had just Rained. and then was sunny. I like this shot, and the reflections. but don't look at the top right.. there was something on my camera lens. I was still new with my D40 ok.
