Razer mice suffer from high-pitched "squealing" noise? (Calling all Razer owners!)

    Hey!

I'm currently using a Logitech MX518 and its performance is good. However it suffers from a fundamental flaw: It exhibits a constant and very annoying high-pitched squealing noise [1] (allegedly originating from the scroll wheel IR LED transmitter [ for more info see this link ] ). I've read that the same is true for Logitech's newer G5 and G7 mice. (The Logitech Trackman Wheel, which I use as a desktop mouse, on the other hand is silent. But it obviously can't compete with a proper gaming mouse for gaming.)

I'd really want to get a nice quiet gaming mouse. Does anyone know if the Razer mice suffer from any similar whine? If they're silent I got to get me one of those (there are myriads of them though, any recommendations?).

If you own a Razer mouse, could you please put it next to your ear and tell me whether you can hear any whine, noise, squeal or otherwise coming from the mouse or whether it's silent?

    Thanks!

[1] It's a very high-pitched noise and likely can't be perceived by a lot of people as not everyone can physically hear it. That doesn't mean it's not there.

I own a Logitech MX510 and a MX518 and I gave my Razer Copperhead review sample to my cousin.
I haven't heard any of those mice squealing at all ( and believe me, my ears are top notch lol ) neither my cousin did.

Put your MX518 to your ear. It's very high-pitched and like I said, it wouldn't surprise me if many (most?) don't hear it. It's there though (it's been reported with both major revisions). If your hearing indeed is top-notch, I guess there's the possibility of this being a "hit and miss" flaw (some lucky and/or unlucky samples floating around) or something. I very much doubt it's been "fixed" though as it's still present in the G7 (a quick google came up with this for instance).

It's more than likely a hit & miss m8 ( just like the squealing coils on various graphics cards ).

    Good to hear, Xello.

BenchZowner, did you listen to the Razer though? Was it silent?

A few years ago when I bought my MX518, I also purchased a Razer Diamondback at the same time. I had a hard time deciding between the two, but a friend wanted the Diamondback real bad so I sold it to him (cheaply) and kept the MX518 for myself. I wasn't very noise-sensitive at all back then, so it took a while (maybe a year?) before I realized my MX518 was emitting this high-pitched noise. It's really getting on my nerves now though, so I'm looking for a replacement. Anyway, just because you haven't noticed it yet, it doesn't mean it's not there (it was the same for me).

I've had an MX518(it's currently sitting in my cupboard) and I currently have a Razer Death Adder and none of them squeal at all. And trust me I'm very sensitive to high-pitch sounds.

Just listened to my G5 at your request.

Yeah, it squeaks, but it's not "high pitched" and it's so quiet that it's impossible to hear. And really, it is. I've used my computer at the dead of the night I can hear my fans over the 'squealing.'

If what I hear is what you hear and you think it's annoying, you most probably developed a genetic mutation and you have bat ears. It really is totally unnoticeable.

I wouldn't let it sway your buying decision - I'm gunning for a G9 next, afterall.

Laser mice have no moving parts...I can't understand why one would make a noise and I'm sorry it happened to you.

I suggest the Lachesis. Perfect future proof 4'000DPI [I like it sensitive] and regardless of the reviews on newegg, it fits my hand fine.

cegras, it probably is. Some are more sensitive to this than others (the same goes for other kinds of noises as well). If you are sensitive to it (and unfortunately I am) it's a real problem.

I think I will get a Razer then, there are other brands too of course but Logitech and Razer seems to be the most popular choices and should be 'safe' bets (as far as mouse performance is concerned).

    Thanks everyone!

I have exceptional hearing, and am very sensitive to noise, so I know where you're coming from. Both my old and new MX518 make the high-pitched squealing noise, as does my G9. The mouse that comes with the Logitech MX 3200 keyboard+mouse combo makes an even louder noise, which is just ridiculously annoying. My DeathAdder on the other hand, is completely silent, but also came broken(can't change DPI or update firmware, among other things). My MX Revolution was also silent, or very quiet, I believe.

I tend to have bad luck with these sorts of things. My 8800 GTX, 8800 Ultra, 9800 GX2, and GTX 280 have all had the coil whine issue.
