Use a HX in a chiller as evap?

Ii have seen people use plate heat exchangers in cascade units, so i know they are up to the pressure and obviously perform this function well enough to use. I have a 16 plate HX lying around that i got for cheap. Could i route coolant through one side, and have the other side as an evap?

I understand that im going to lose some capacity through not having a big container full of liquid to pull down. But this idea takes up less room. Just wondering if it works!

This is actually one of the the best ways to go about a water chiller much more compact and very efficient. This would be the heat exchanger- you would still need a resevoir i would imagine.

    Ah cool thats great news.

Is there a specific way up a HX should go? Evap side going in thru the bottom. Water in through the top? Vice versa?

What temps will My Laing D5 put up with?

you can use the HX as the resivoir, since it holds some liquid (not a lot) it can get cooler faster, same way as the instantaneous hot water systems work (baxi and noritz, not sure on other brands) use plated HX

as for the ins and outs they are setup left/right orientation (that is the narrow sides being top/bottom)
