I don't have any problem with spending $5k on a PC (if I had the money I certainly would) but I have to agree with everyone saying that you could have done a heck of a lot better with that budget.... depending on what kind of performance you are looking for, you could have done better with $2000 IMO.

Buying a QX9650, as others have said, is not a bright idea right now with Nehalem literally 2 months away at most. The E8600 for $500 less than what you paid will not only be much easier on the wallet but will also overclock significantly better and thus have higher single-threaded performance. A $266processor also retains its value a lot better than a $750 one.

At this point spending $1,000+ on memory is really rediculous, this is arguably the worst decision that you made. DDR3 makes no real difference in performance with Core 2 Duo CPUs; with the slow FSB, it can't take advantage of the bandwidth advantage. Wait till Nehalem to worry about DDR3 memory at this time, unless you are only buying 2GB (where DDR3 isn't too expensive). You could have spent $200 on 8GB of high-end DDR2 memory and saved over $800, and you would have only sacrificed a percent or two in real world performance.

Spending $400 on an SSD at this point is also rediculous. The technology has not matured yet and it is just not worth it for 32GB of storage. Right now it has a purpose for tiny netbooks that don't need much storage space and require a small low-power drive, but it is not suitable for desktop use.

The thing that confuses me is your video selection. If I were spending $5,000 on a rig right now, I would be going for either 3x GTX 280 SLI (with nVidia mobo) or 2x HD 4870 X2 (4-way Crossfire) with an Intel motherboard. It makes no sense at all to throw 2 HD 4850's, which can be had for under $300, in a $5000 system. If you do any kind of gaming, what you spend on the video cards is by far the most important thing. If you are doing gaming, that is what I mean when I said that you could have spent $2000 and gotten a better system.

Spending $400 on 3TB of storage is up to you; if you need that much storage, then I can't argue with it. But 99% of people don't need anything more than 500GB-1TB, at most. And the HDD cooling is really rediculous, you don't need that at all.

I don't know much of anything about water cooling, but from what I know, if you are going to do it buying a cheap (relatively, compared to the rest of your build) all in one kit is not the way to do it. I can't give you any advice on what you should have purchased, but someone else should be able to.

As for the monitors..... if I were spending $5,000 on a system I would have purchased a 30" monitor for sure, but if 2x 24" is better for what you are doing, then that is your choice.

As I said there is nothing wrong with spending $5,000 on a system. We are just pointing out that the way you spent $5,000 was rediculous. In my opinion at least, you spent a lot of money on a lot of fancy gadgets that are not really necessary. Where performance actually matters, such as in video, you didn't spend the money that you should have. It seems to me that more attention was put towards driving up the pricetag with those expensive gadgets than buying the highest-performing parts. In regards to performance, the build really isn't high-end. It is more of a showcase build with a bunch of expensive toys. When you buy your Nehalem rig, I suggest that you spend more time on here before you purchase and get advice.

Jealousy...maybe a little, but not in a bad way.

The thing some of us are trying to get at is you can have the same performance for less. But cheers for being able to afford 15k in 4 months on PCs!

Get a RAID card and a few Mtron SSDs for the OS and then have 3-4 storage drives in some sort of RAID.

to all those still telling him to get an e8600, he already has a qx9650, so i doubt its going to make him return it... that corsair dominator ram is silly, even if you want 8gb of ddr3 1800, you can get it for the cost of just one of those dominator kits... ala this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820231177, same exact specs, though i don't know much about ddr3 so i don't know how both kits would oc... forget about the ssd, as its not mature yet, and get a velociraptor or two. get a 4870x2, it has 1gb of frame buffer for each gpu. get better screens, like samsung or dell. do some research and pick out your own watercooling components, instead of buying that pre-configured heap of crap. dangerden would be a good start. you said yourself that you want the best quality you can get, so listen to our advice instead of calling us jealous... if you want jealousy, go to the xtreme overclocking section, and i guarantee you will be jealous of the hardware that gets oc'd there regularly.

If certain ppl have money to burn then let them.
He wanted comments on his build and he has go that.

I say its your money and if you wish to burn it BE my guest as i could careless.

I can buy all that stuff you listed right now, but why?

    Waste of money is all.

Get 2 x 4870X2 cards and then you be rocking for sure and buy better LCD monitors, Samung and Dell make some really good ones.

As for that ram WHAT hell FOR .. buy 8GB some cheaper memory.

You know guys, the G2400WD's really aren't that bad. Of course they're TN's, but they're not that bad out of the box. Viewing angles and color reproduction will not match good *VA's or IPS, but considering how much the units above would cost... Also, Dell's 2408 has rather high input lag, which would be a problem for games, the 2707 is also sluggish. Leaving the 3007WFP, which would own that budget. Samsung's comparable unit in that price is the 245BW, and the G2400WD edges it out in colors.

So the monitor choices really aren't that bad, I mean if he wanted to go high end he should've gone NEC which would've been four digits per monitor.

Some revisions based on the feedback here:

    - Dumped the Dominator, still have 8GB of DDR3 for a half the price.

    - Dropped 2x 24" monitors in favor of one 28" (saved $200 on that).

    - Dropped the HD Cooling (I'm not expert in this field at all but it seemed a reasonable solution) and the WC kit stays, I've never done WC and figure it's safe for now to go with the best rated kit. Once I figure it out and see how it all works, I'll be sure to modify/upgrade parts.

    - Also drastically upgraded the GPUs to 2 2x HD4850. 8 cores should be adequate.

    - Remember, I already have the QX9650 (at $750) so I'm locked in on that.

I'd go 24" or 30", but not 28", the dot pitch will be way too high for my liking.
Also for the hd's I'd go for wd6400aaks drives instead. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...Tpk=wd6400aaks

Why not just go DDR2? DDR3 doesn't offer significant gains on this platform and I imagine it'll be cheaper when it does become mainstream.

Also, I'd still consider swapping out the PSU. Perhaps for this unit:
    http://www.provantage.com/corsair-cm...x~7CSMC068.htm

Then there's also the issue with SSD...but hey someone's gotta pay for it now. I'd tell you to swap out the drives for F1 Spinpoints from Samsung, but newegg isn't carrying them for 100 anymore.

Yeah, but when i7 becomes mainstream, will 4GB of DDR3-1600 still cost 230 dollars?

At least for me the gains now don't make the price premium worth it and I imagine when the platform will be able to take advantage of it, DDR3 will be cheaper. Anyway, someone's gotta invest in this cutting edge stuff...that's just what I think.

Good choice on changing the memory and saving a few dollars there. You would be hardpressed to run 8GB anywhere near the rated specs of your first choice.

What's the monitor mainly going to be used for? Me, I'd ditch the HDTV and get a nice 30" 2500x1500 monitor. It would cost more, but I'd save by going DDR2 1066. Plus you save on the corresponding motherboard as well.

You didn't mention gaming, if you don't need to game then one 3870 or even 3650 would suffice for HD movie viewing. I'd put the money saved towards a second 24" monitor on the side

Also, you might need a dedicated RAID card to see proper performance from those 4 drives instead of onboard.

Couple questions. Why 8gb of ram? what will you manage to use all of that up on? arent most programs only 32bit and only able to use 2gb of memory? so you would need 4 massive programs that manage to eat up close to 2gb each before it would show its usefulness!

I didnt catch if you were going to be gaming, but if not then no need to spend near that much on video cards! Something like a 2400 or 3450.. heck anything with onboard video decoding (not that you need it with that cpu). If you are gaming, then go balls to the wall like the rest of the system, get 2 4870x2s.

I would go one step further than that to be honest.

Pity you can't return that CPU, I would of bought the Q9550 instead or maybe an E8500/E8600 (Higher clocks) to get the most out of those HD 4870X2's.

The Motherboard is probally the best P45 motherboard out for what you get, 4GB of RAM will be good enough for you & the Corsair 1000W PSU is made by Channel Well Technology one of THE best, plus it's modular easier to sort cabling.

Gaming? We call it "Crysis Management" here in the office. It's a media workhorse, crunching, massive PSDs, movies and a presentation box for my office. It will be hooked up to a 72" Plasma that's wall mounted behind my office chair.

And running Vista64, I'll chew up 8GB (granted, with some effort) but I also run no swap, as a rule.

with that much money why not shell out for a dual socket system 8 cores should be better than 4 cores in rendering.
you are going for workstation right? like movies and all that junk?

Yep. Crunching. I was going to go Skulltrail, still wish I could but it's socket 771 and the QX9650 I already have is 775 - so I'm "stuck" with the QX9650, not that bad really!

I'll go dual Nahalem on my personal build.

Coming in November/December, I'll be building my personal Nehalem rig and have a $10k budget set aside for that. Stay tuned.
There is a Nehalem system in the XS Official Rig Building guide for $3,500 (without monitors) that will slap around your $5,000 rig.

Point being, wait for Nehalem for your $5,000 rig. You don't need hard drive coolers or the QX. Grab the regular Q9650, get a blu-ray player (wait for faster burners), take 2x750GB if you are taking an SSD, you will never need more than 4GBs of ram unless you will be running 4+ VMs 24/7, grab this case: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811119155 , stay away from watercooling if you need to buy kits to go w/c and you're set.

high-end air cooling is as good or better than cheap water cooling. also, if you aren't gaming on this computer, CrossFire is a waste.

    Nice rig.

Wait for Nehalem if you can. Its coming in a month and a bit.

And it doesn't matter how massive those PSDs are. Photoshop does not use the GPU, and has a 3GB memory limit since its a 32bit app. Your 8GB of ram is pointless unless you are running multiple instances of Photoshop.

Movies also don't need so much horsepower, nor do powerpoint slides.

You are better off with a single HD4850.

I'd cut out all the useless parts you don't need from the system. It will have lower power consumption and lower heat output resulting. Then I would invest in a nice heavy duty steel case, and some quality watercooling. For an office machine I would want something silent, rock solid, and it should run cool.

CrossFire can also be used for 3D CAD as well.... and that's about it.

2GB of video memory idling all day with the Vista Aero desktop.

Some people like that though. There's lots of rich guys, with garages full of expensive cars that never see the light of day.
