I think the only really good way to stop people pirating software is making really good multiplayer play. The reason why games like Assassin's Creed got pirated so much was because it was single player. COD4 for example, I'm sure it was pirated a lot but look at how many copies it sold just because it has great multiplayer play.

Who would of thought people don't mind paying for a game with above average gameplay.
Yet when a game only comes in Singleplayer, sales slump.
Wow, so hard to figure out, no wonder noone understands this.

Yeah, the only real way to make video games un-piratable is to make them have great multiplayer functionality. Any other method just pisses of the customers who buy and play the game legit (such as needing to have the disk in your drive to play and not having it be easily emulated under a program like Alcohol 120% or Daemon Tools).

look at counter-strike. that game is nearly impossible, if not impossible, to pirate because it's just multiplayer, and great at that.

I use daemon tools just to mount a mini image. I have the disc and all though, is that considered pirating?

I don't buy single player games! I buy multiplayer games that I play online with other people. That being said I don't buy games that require a monthly fee on top of having to purchase the game.

It's just plain dumb to try and counter piracy on single-player offline games.. make quality games with a vibrant online community and gameplay and you will sell many copies. Online multiplayer = future.

Online multiplayer with out hackers= future, its not just the piracy, it's the hacking that comes along with all pc games......PB sux.......with consoles it can be easier dealt with. FYI i can't use a console controller for the life of me.....(age 33 old dog, no new tricks ) I have a ps3, makes a great bluray player i'll stick to the pc for games.

I've never been a big fan of console gaming... control with a stick is too awkward when compared to a mouse and I just love RTS games.

Back in the days of DOS, pirating was as simple as copy and paste, yet no one raised their voices over that...
CSS has crack server networks for multiplayer play via a cracked copy.

yeah like Omaster was saying in another thread, the game developers who do well will be the one's who price effectively, have better delivery systems (steam) in place, as well as compelling multiplayer campaigns. How does the saying go? Desperation is the mother of creativety?
As Los Alamos director J. Robert Oppenheimer watched the demonstration, he later said that a line from the Hindu scripture the Bhagavad Gita came to mind:
"I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds."
Test director Kenneth Bainbridge in turn said to Oppenheimer, "Now we are all sons of b**ches." wiki

Naa but they came locked usually so you couldn't use them as blanks, easily fixed with a piece of tape though :P

pirated software is here to stay as long as the bloom of programmers is more than ethically educated ones ..
the trouble is, every country wants their citizen to be computer literate person instead of actually educating them to be an ethical computer user.

For single-player?, all the way around. Pirating Steam games is easier than some Tages, Securom, or activation protected games.
You just need a loader and the game's files and you are set.

I think that what really affect sales are the 0-day cracks, or even worse, cracks released days before the retail date.

Bioshock had the same copy protection system than AITT5, and it took like a week for the first barely-working crack to be released. Many people didn't wait and just bought it.

    .....gulp......

    "more pirate proof"?

pc games are so full of security crap that it blocks out legit users from playing their games

IMHO, pirates are the only ones who can play games without this hassle

    yes
What needs to happen for pc gaming is console like disks, that are encrypted, put in the disk and play just like xbox and ps3, only if its single player, but if its MP, then online authentication is required so it wont matter if the disk is in or not.
