New search engine to out cuil google

" "Search 121,617,892,992 web pages" claims the front page of the new search engine Cuil (pronounced "cool" apparently). Those 120 billion pages are about three times as many as Google actually indexes, according to developer Anna Patterson... and she should know as until 2006 she worked there. Presented in a kind of "magazine style," Cuil will apparently get more pertinent results as it drills into the contents of a page, unlike Google's complex ranking system. Since two more of the development team also worked for Google, and there's $33 million of venture capital behind the new site, it is certainly going to be an interesting development to keep tabs on."

the whole thing is based on web 2.0 so its a little different at first, but its easy to get used to.

    sorry for off topic but:

theres a link on that page at the bottom related to other stories, the googlepoo one, it goes over how google owns about every other version of google[something].com and i must say its quite funny, and im probably not allowed to list any of those names for fear of being banned.

The interface looks nice and the results, as you pointed out, takes a little getting used to.
However it's nice to see someone trying to create something new without being scared by the might of Google.

A search on the word "xtremesystems" on Cuil showed 82.885 hits and on google 873.000 hits.

Doing a search for "overclocking" will give 600.000 hits on Cuil and 22.800.000 hits on google, however it will also show two different ways of presenting the found information.Cuil presents it's results in a very nice way.

I'm making it my primary - if I can get it into my toolbar somehow - and will use google if I don't find what I want.

I wonder if they will try to include boolean searches - especially by proximity and using wildcards for parts of words. THAT would be really useful.

i dunno, to me it is useless unless it is smart enough to give suggestions for mistyped words. search for something, and put an extra character on the end... it comes up empty w/ no suggestions.

tried several keywords that didn't return any results (and "escape velocity" definitely should). seems useless to me until they do a *lot* more work on it

I get an error in FF and IE when I try to search. Did the 20 people from XS who tried to search bork their site?

    We’ll be back soon...

Due to overwhelming interest, our Cuil servers are running a bit hot right now. The search engine is momentarily unavailable as we add more capacity.

    Thanks for your patience.
