Roadmap hints we have to wait 365 days to get Lynnfield mobo

Nehalem is coming! but only die hard overclockers will have bucks to get them… It is said Intel will unveil X58 and Bloomfield in the end of this year, that’s good. But according to Intel’s updated roadmap, we normal users have to wait till 09Q3 then get our hands on with Ibex Peak platform. Different from the Bloomfield mobo X58 we already know, the Ipex Peak platform will only use Lynnfield CPU, because it uses LGA 1160 socket.

Similar to Bloomfield, Lynnfield is a native quad core CPU, supports SMT (Simultaneous Multi-Threading), has 8MB Shared Cache. The main difference is Lynnfield will only supports Dual Channel DDR3, and Bloomfield supports Tri Channel. What’s more, Lynnfield have PCI Express interconnection inside, make it totally supports PCIe 2.0 X16, or dual PCIe 2.0 x8 crossfire.

X58 features Quick Path Interconnect, but Ibex Peak doesn’t. Ibex Peak will only use the old DMI (Direct Media Interface) link, peak speed will be 2GT/s, which is totally enough for southbridge connection.

Intel still need a year to polish the platform so let’s wait and see.

hmm since the graph shows X58 to range into the perfromance segemnt, i think we see some cheaper X58 boards.

I think most of us will be jumping on X58 anyway. They will be costly mobos at first but after half a year I'm sure it will be in our price range.

There is no performance segment on that graph
There is: extreme, high-end and this will probably reach down to premium.
X38 was supposed to be cheaper, too, but it didn't turn out to be...

QFT! Supply and demand dictates that. Does anyone here think Intel would be selling processors limited to high-end until Q3-09 if it had competition pushing them?

QPI replaces the FSB and for Processor to Processor com. DMI is already serialized Point to Point and the first use or a derivative of PCI-E. QPI is not needed for an I/O link.

945gc still has no replacement? Pretty long lifespan for the chipset. Looks like the wait for the mid segment ibex peak will take a almost a year of waiting.

This isn't really a problem unless intel decides to sell only 1000$ Nehalems until Lynnfield

Who cares, Ibexpeak is for Dells. Just give us some X58 love and that will be enough for years.

I think Westmere will slot into the LGA1366 socket. It's not like DDR3 will be old hat by Q4 09 unless an industry change happens.

When is P55 coming out? Or is there an equivalent I should be looking at? It still doesn't make sense for me to go SLI/Xfire. Good thing is I plan to build a new system in the fall of next year so these should be out by then.

It makes perfect fiscal sense, milk old tech for as long as you can, and force adopters to pay premiums for performance, as there is no viable alternative for us at the moment :/ If they are releasing that late, then they have an idea then, if and when amd will have something to compete with nehalem, and will saturate the market again with their goods. heh. Iguess i m paying a premium for my next system :P

There is a truism in business that "Competition and demand control prices"
At the top end right now Intel doesn't have competition and the demand for their products is high so the prices will stay high until AMD rolls out a cpu that competes with their products.
We got spoiled with the C2D's being relatively cheap when Intel was competing with the excellent X2's and Opty's.
That's history and the marketplace has changed.
The smart move as I see it is to stick with a Q6600 or a E8400-E8500 if your into gaming until the prices drop.

I can't say I'm too fussed.. I mean, I remember looking in the catalogues just the last decade and a regular desktop Pentium machine had the same price as a Mac Pro does today. We've been spoiled with low prices. Unless single-socket mainstream PCs start reaching that price level again I'm not complaining.

Never. You would buy a Lynnsfield then.

I'd estimate about Q2-09. These will be something like Baby X58 with Dual Channel DDR3 and 8X PCI-E 2.0 slots. Note, the Two PCI-E 2.0 slots are the same as two 16X PCI-E 1.0. If Intel sticks to its naming scheme, there will eventually be G51-53, P55 and maybe even a X55.

I'm wondering if there'll be any Legacy support

There can't be a baby-X58 with dual-channel.. The memory controller has nothing to do with X58.

But the amout of Memory slots and CPU socket does X55 can be identical to X58 but with a 1160 socket and 4 RAM slots!
